Default The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

As a former English major, I have read all the major classics. To this day, I read at least one novel/book a week, so around 50 books a year. Stieg Larrson's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" is one of the top 5 books I've ever read. It's sequel is also one of the top 5 books I've ever read. Larsson died of a massive heart attack soon after he submitted the transcripts to three books in the series; he never lived to see them published (leading to speculation that he was murdered, due to his journalistic background and the content of the books). In 2009, Larsson was the second best selling author in the world, behind only Khaled Hosseini (Kite Runner). Fifty percent of the population in the Scandanavian countries own his books.

Sweden decided to make movie versions of the three books and today, March 19, the first in the series is released in the US to limited release.

It finished up with an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes: "Its graphic violence and sprawling length will prove too much for some viewers to take, but Noomi Rapace's gripping performance makes The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo an unforgettable experience

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/millenium_le_film/

Roger Ebert gave the film four stars, stating that the main character Lisbeth Salander is "as compelling as any movie character in recent history." This sentiment is echoed by book critics, who have claimed she immediately places herself among the top 10 literature characters of all-time (as stated by at least half a dozen major critics). I personally believe there is no better character in literature, both popular and classic, than her. It's impossible to convey why without spoiling anything.

Ahh...I've checked everywhere within 60 miles of Fort Lauderdale and I can't find a single theater playing it. It's already made $100 million at the international box office, so I expect it to get a larger release soon. As the trailer said, both the book and movie have become a major phenomenon.

I doubt it too. Most of my family lives there and my grandparents are currently there, so I'll ask them to check.

What's going to be a negative is that most theaters don't play foreign films to begin with. Those that do will undoubtedly be playing the best foreign film nominees, to take advantage of the Oscar exposure.

This is the next book I will be reading, very excited about it. I am in line to pick up the IPAD on 04/03, and this very well may be my test book for the IPAD's E-Reader, if it is available of course.

The trailer was on the Ultimate Trailer show a few episodes back, looks very intriguing.

The first 30-40 pages is slow, but then it realllly picks up. I didn't think the second book in the series could be any better, but I was wrong. The Girl Who Played with Fire won all the awards it did for good reason--it's even better than Dragon Tattoo.

The movie version of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo combines elements of the first two books, so you get some of Lisbeth's backstory in the movie (the entire second book is about her backstory).

Ahh gotcha. I'm resigned to the fact that I'll have to see it on On Demand or netflix before purchasing it.

The first film is great and the best, while the sequels come pretty close. I seriously recommend go see it if possible.

One thing though - the first film was made for a theatrical release and was shot in 35mm and presented in glorious cinemascope, while the sequels were initially made for television and have a more rough look in widescreen.

Lisbeth Salander is a great character - a fourth book is being prepared from a manuscript left unfinished by Stieg Larsson.
