MAL01 ~ I know you don't have A PJ But I had issues with my ceiling & walls .There was way to much light reflecting on them . I painted the walls A med. to dark brown . I did not want to paint the ceiling black so I improvised & put black acoustic foam across the ceiling 2 feet out , which mached up with the foam I already had on the ceiling .

First pick is before painting & foam , 2nd & 3rd pics are the result of what I did , No more light reflecting of the walls or ceiling .

I haven't done it yet, but I'm painting mine black. I have to put up all the crown and door trim first so it can all be sprayed at once.

Hey Crazy,
I don`t have a pj, YET, but i will soon I`m remodeling my basement and have painted the walls a sort of medium dark green. The ceiling is white but don`t want to keep it that color. I put some green on part of the ceiling and don`t know if it will work or not, might make the room a little claustraphobic. I`m going to move all of my equipment down there and it will be a tv watching room/ theater. The room is very dark, the windows were bricked over so no natural light. Painting it dark and then putting up some panels might break it up some.

If you are getting A PJ Then doing something would be A good idea IMO . I did not realize how much light would play into it until I got one . The light Blue on the walls & the white ceiling were vary annoying & really caught my attention when watching A movie . The darker the room the better the viewing is I think .

If it is going to be a dedicated theater room and you have a projector I would strongly suggest you paint the ceiling black. Black is boring that is why I wallpapered the ceiling with embossed wallpaper and then I painted black. It gives the ceiling some character. Its a nightmare putting wallpaper on the ceiling, but well worth it!

P.s. Flat black

Mine is white, but I put up 2 valances and some black acoustic foam on the ceiling in front of my screen to handle any light reflections. I went a step further and added curtains to the sides of the screen as well. This resulted in a much improved level of contrast in the picture from my projector.

Mine is Gray..

Something the same color as your walls, but a couple shades lighter is something you can go with.. Whatever you choose, just make sure the finish is Flat!

i went to sherwin williams and got this black that was specifically desinged for indutrialized places like bars and theaters . i forget the exact mix but it was effectively the blackest black they manufactured.

it was a huge pain though because my ceining is stomped and even with a 2 inch nap if i applied too much pressure it knocked pieces of texture off showing white. the look more than makes up for it though, it did at first make the room seem really closed in, but ive gotten used to it and if a potential buyer doesnt like it ill just spray it white.

Nothing like my poor picture taking abilities to make my recessed lights look like light-bulbs hanging from my ceiling

I would say that whatever color you decide, make sure it's dark. Another consideration is the angle of the projector. If you're going ceiling mounted, the light cast on the ceiling should be less than if your projector is sitting on a table or ledge.

I struggled with the color decision and ended up going with a dark gold. It worked great and I have no regrets at all. My Dad painted his ceiling a dark royal blue and it looks amazing.

On a side note, I'm definitely a fan of painting the screen wall black. It will increase perceived contrast and really make the image "pop". In my case, I have a glare coming from the stage/enclosure top. Some black velvet on it completely absorbs all light.

But yeah, back to the ceiling color, be sure to use a flat finish and you'll be all set.

I would vote for Black also if it is dedicated theater. I was lucky enough to talk my wife into black (she was against it at first), and I coudn't be happier. It really helps with perceived contrast. I agree that Flat black is the best for performance, but a satin finish or egg shell will be easier to paint. I ended up going with a satin finish.

I some how missed your gallery. You are right, your ceiling looks great and your room overall is very nice. Great job!

My room has exposed beams so it broke up the black and it doesn't look so boring.

This is a good point, if you can black out your front wall, that helps a lot also.
