Default Old Scorsese or New Scorsese?

I'm attaching a poll to this, but since the thread is more about discussion, I'll post it here instead of in the Movie Polls sub-forum.

After recently re-watching The Departed, and seeing Shutter Island over the weekend, I started to think I just don't like the DiCaprio Scorsese.

At least when compared to the De Niro Scorsese.

The DiCaprio Scorsese
Gangs of New York
The Aviator
The Departed
Shutter Island

The De Niro Scorsese
Taxi Driver
Raging Bull
The King of Comedy
Goodfellas
Cape Fear
Casino

With the exception of Cape Fear, I think every movie in the De Niro list would rank ahead of all the movies in the DiCaprio list. And it's not because I like De Niro, because I don't, really.

Casino, Goodfellas, and Raging Bull are classics to me. Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy aren't far behind.

The Aviator was great for an hour, then it just dragged on and on. Gangs of New York was ridiculous. Shutter Island was a struggle to even sit through. And The Departed was pretty good, but not exactly a masterpiece.

What's happened to Marty?

You didn't like Gangs of New York? I love that movie. Aviator was great too and so is The Departed. I think The Departed is one of his best films.

So I pick the new.

For me, absolutely no question.....Taxi Driver and Raging Bull are two of his best films. I think Scorsese's early body of work is superior to his new, but that doesn't mean he's lost his touch.

I don't fully agree on Raging Bull, other than that, spot on!

That's a very tough decision--so many classics on the old list, yet The Departed, Gangs of New York and The Aviator are all masterpieces, imo. I think his new films are both a perfect compliment and worthy new additions to his earlier work. I suppose I'd pick new just because he seems to be one of very few directors whose vast knowledge of film and immense talent keeps him relevant and focused, even after creating so many classic films.

I wonder? What is the age cutoff for veteran?

Well recently I had a great time with Gangs Of NY & The Aviator. I know that his older stuff is worship by millions but I never really got into Taxi Driver. I actualy find Deniro annoying in the movie more then offering a good performance. Yes I am talking to you mister Deniro! I know you can't compare Ragin Bull with Rocky but Ragin Bull just put me to sleep. Also a lot of his early movies include actors I don't truly enjoy, like Pesci. I find him to be such annoying little troll most of the time, I want to tell him to take a pill and relax a little. My Favorite movie with him is Home Alone cause he get's his @ss kick by a 8 year old So I prefer his new movies. Plus I enjoy most of Leonardo's movies, even if he is not very popular with most people, I usualy find him very good.

I really like the new Scorsese, but you just can't beat Raging Bull, Taxi Driver and Goodfellas, so I vote OLD.

I wouldn't say I dislike any of his newer movies, I just don't think they're on the same level as the old ones.

It seems like recently he goes over the top with things, and it ruins the movie. With Gangs of New York, the depiction of violence took away from what could've been an interesting story. I liked DD Lewis' performance, but ultimately the movie seemed like it had no point.

With The Aviator, he seemed more focused on the artsy part of the movie (filming it in a way that represented the year depicted in the scene), that it seems like he forgot about making it entertaining. I really liked the first hour or so though.

Christopher Nolan finished writing a screenplay about Howard Hughes around the time this movie started being made. I hope Nolan's version will eventually be made one day, because Hughes' life story is interesting, and I trust Nolan as a writer.

With Shutter Island... I don't know. Psychological thrillers just don't seem to be Scorsese's strong suit, and I thought DiCaprio kind of mailed in his performance. At one point, about halfway through, he's talking with Ruffalo, and says "What? What? How am I acting?", and in my head I laughed and thought "not well".

His vast knowledge of film (which someone else mentioned) is, I think, part of the problem. Scorsese's recent movies seem self-indulgent, more than anything else.

lol at the Pesci comment
Too bad you find Deniro annoying, I consider him to be one of the greatest actors ever, I almost choose his newer movies, Departed, GONY, The Aviator but I haven't had the chance to see Shutter Island yet, all of those I immensely enjoy.
Dicaprio is one of my favourite actors actually, he's very intense and Titanic shouldn't discredit him I like that movie actually..

I like Goodfellas, The Departed and Taxi Driver, in that order. I could give or take the rest of those movies. I could never enjoy Gangs of New York because I'm just can't buy Leo as a tough guy. It's a well-made movie, but I don't like Raging Bull either due to the meathead violence and wife beating.

Scrosese seems like a great guy, but he's ubiquitous. You can't go a week without seeing him on some program giving machinegun opinions on one thing or another. He would give an interview to a high school newspaper.

I think the older Scorsese movies were better, but the newer ones are excellent as well. It's difficult to choose, and that's why I'm not going to .
