Default Building Shelves

Girlfriend and I want to mount tv on wall. Smaller living room, so with tv stand and everywhere, taking up alot of space. Well were trying to figure out how to build shelves and everything out of the wall to save on space. We want the shelves to be free floating. Kinda the Ikea theory, build up instead of out. Does anybody have DIY for what I'm talking about. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was actually wondering the same thing. Low on space and need to do something on the wall.

My buddy did it but just want to get a second opinion via the site on how other's have done it.

How much weight are you planning on putting on the shelves? Most of the ones they sell at Lowes don't have that high of a rating. I designed a system for a guy that would of held enough weight for his equipment, but it was a fairly involved install. I'll try and find my files on it...

Well I figured the most weight I will be putting on these shelves is around 20 lbs. Figure an HD/DVR DISH receiver.

To do it right, you would need to involve drywalling. I would try to mount the brackets directly to the studs and then drywall around them.

That's how I designed mine. I figured on about a 6" lip with a 22" shelf. I over engineered it because the guy had kids and knew at some point one would "fiddle" with them. After screwing them directly to the studs and doing the sheetrock work I was going to use a 3/4 piece of birch plywood. Then after mounting the plywood, I would have used some 1/4"x1" moulding to dress the raw edges up.

Or even like a "t" shaped bracket like the ones used on the B-Tech BT77 speaker mounts.

Girlfriend still has old ass wood paneling up in her house. Asked her about putting drywall/sheet rock up and she pretty much said, not going to invest any more money into the house. Told her would help out with selling, and was given the look I have no idea what I am talking about. Oh well.
