Default Who else remembers the Neo Geo?

I do and I have very fond memories of it. Ya, the price was far too high for most kids to own, but the system was light years ahead of it's time. One of my friends with a wealthy family actually owned one and we had some amazing times playing it.

The Neo Geo AES was an absolute beast with arcade perfect ports. At one time the maker (SNK) of Neo Geo was one of my favorite game developers. They produced countless great games and series such as Samurai Showdown, King of Fighters, Baseball Stars, 2020 Super Baseball, King of the Monsters, Metal Slug, World Heroes, The Last Blade and Fatal Fury just to name a few. Even if you don't remember their amazing home console you probably remember playing their games in the arcade if you are around my age.

Sadly their consoles largely flopped due to the high price tag of the console and standard $200+ cost of games. SNK also made a Neo Geo CD console, but that flopped as well largely due to aweful loading times and poor marketing. I'm actually considering buying a used AES console and some of their classic games. SNK still does make games these days but they are mostly very poor quality.

My local video store had a Neo Geo and me and my buddies would rent it out every now and then. We always rented it with King of Fighters. The game was awesome but me and my buddies would always fight over the cheap moves the game allowed. I really would like to get my hands on a Neo Geo now, I am a collector of old systems and that is a large gap in my collection.

Pretty sure you can download Neo Geo games via the Wii Shop channel if you have a Wii.

Never had one, but I remember that I said this system has the best graphics.

I think the price tag was $600!

Only a small number of games for $8 each on the Wii shop. SNK did put out a compilation called SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 for the PS2 a couple years ago which can be found for around $15 or less. It has about a dozen great SNK classic titles on one disc.

Yep, $600 was the original price for the AES cartridge console. The games retailed for about $200 each. Sounds like a lot but we are talking about a time when the SNES dominated the market with graphics a good 5+ years behind the Neo Geo. Nothing compared to the Neo Geo for most of the console's lifespan.

I'd have to dispute that simply for the fact that 4 years after the Super NES came out, PlayStation hit the scene.

Neo Geo spared no expense with ROM chips. It's graphical power was beyond other 16-bit platforms, but the real driver was that they used really big memory chips for their games so their devs had room to spread out with high-bit images.

My local bowling alley had a Neo Geo arcade machine. It was my favorite thing ever.

SNK hasn't be around in since 2001 when SNKPlaymore(or just Playmore) statrted so the quality of the games has diminished greatly.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snk_playmore

Atari isn't the same Atari that made the 2600, the management, programmers, owners etc have changed though SNKPlaymore is closer to SNK than current Atari is to its former self.

I would love to get any and all the consoles, AES, CD, Pocket Color and of course the games. AES is the best for playing arcade games since there wasn't much of a difference between NeoGeo in the arcade or at home.

Yeah, I remember playing them in the arcade and seeing it in the shops. I think it was around the time I was into SNES and Genesis.

Metal Slug games were awesome due to the high quality level of animations.. Samarai Showdown, Magician Lord..

I don't remember their being a ton of games for it.

The system was pricey, but the cost of the games is what made most people avoid it.

Ya, and then they created the Neo Geo CD console to eliminate the extremely high prices. Unfortunately the Neo Geo CD just added it's own set of problems - notably ridiculous load times.

You can get a fair few Neo Geo games on PS2 by way of compilations. I have the Metal Slug series; might add Samurai Showdown, Fatal Fury, and/or Arcade vol 1 as well.
