For a foreign title I would suggest The Host

Also Moon would be a good choice.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I watched this with a group of people and they all kept telling me to turn it off, I kept thinking it was going to get better so we watched it until the end, then everyone was mad at me.

^^^^Yeah, people seem to be split on that one. Personally I really like it. One of the few (VERY few) movies I enjoyed a lot and my wife didn't at all. Could make for an interesting night

Just thought of another, The Wrestler. Great performance and a really good movie as well.

To be fair, we watched The Host with voice over instead of subtitles which I thought was a big mistake. I don't mind subtitles but noone else wanted to read the whole movie.

Well there you go .

I have never, nor will ever, watch a foreign film dubbed. I find it to be very distracting and it takes me out of the film. I don't quite understand why some people can't watch with subtitles. After about 10 minutes you forget that you're even reading.

I recommend giving a try again sometime (if you think you can tolerate it). It really is a good movie.

I plan to thats why I kept it, I could tell it would have been better with subtitles the whole time I was watching it. However, my point was its probably not a great group movie. Just for fun try to watch the dubbed version for a few minutes sometime and see what you think.

If you had a similar movie club and were kicking it off, what would you show? The sky is the limit but I am thinking anti-blockbuster, more foreign or independent, something most might not have seen (note that most are not movie buffs). Any suggestions?
So what movie did you decide on?

I'm still deciding actually! I did get Oldboy from Netflix and watched most of it and really liked it, not sure the whole group would though, it's split male/female (I'm sure all the guys would love it!).

I also recently saw 400 Blows and really enjoyed that. I think I'm going to pick up the Criterion version and show that. If they don't like it, I can no longer be friends with them anyway!

While foreign films are great, getting a large group of people to read a movie probably isn't the best way to start off a movie club.

Some suggestions....

Perfume: The story of a murderer - English language film currently available on blu-ray in an expensive german edition.

Days of Heaven - recent Criterion release, certainly not a blockbuster but an excellent well-made film.

Either one of those will make a great choice, I hope it works out for you. Come back and post which movie you showed and how your friends liked it afterwards. Also you should atleast rent Chocolate, one of the movies I mentioned in one of my post, as a possibility for next time. Its a great martial arts action flick so men generally like it, but it also has a great story with a bad ass girl as the main character so women usually love it too.

I agree with you, but I have kind of crappy hearing to begin with, I always watch movies with the subtitles on. I have difficulty hearing the dialogue so I figured since it is my turn hosting (we swithc it up every time and the host chooses, at least thats the plan) I might as well pick one I can enjoy and understand as others will subject me to their drivel!

Plus, part of the point of this is to expose everyone to movies they might not normally look at.

I have seen Perfume, very good movie, just saw/heard about Days of Heaven when I was ordering 400 Blows, will have to check it out as you mentioned as well.

Yea, i had this same problem watching Let the Right One In.... heard how good it was and this and that... watched it Dubbed.... RUINED the movie for me... i couldnt get past how bad the dubbing was... was later told to obviously watch it with subtitles....

One exception to this rule for me is High Tension....i thought they did a pretty good job dubbing that movie... i barely noticed

If you want something lighter, then Ponyo might be good! It's a Studio Ghibli film (which is always good, not to mention kid friendly if that is the situation). Plus, it is a nice looking Blu.

This has inspired me to start a movie club of my own...

A few movies I am thinking about showing are:

New in Town
Dan in Real Life
Lars and the Real Girl
Bandslam

These are really unknown gems to the majority of the world IMO.

Some others I would suggest are (trying to keep to international or smaller films):

La Vei En Rose
Black Book
Amelie
Pan's Labyrnth
Requiem
Mary and Max
Sophie Scholl
The Live Of Others
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Serenity

The UK blu ray does, but I believe that is region locked. I believe there is a release in europe though with the correct subtitles and that is 'region free'.
