Default Revision of Playstation 3

I believe that Sony is making the right decision in revising the PS3 to a 40-GB model w/out backwards compatibility along with lesser "drives" and a $399 price-point. However, since they are keeping the higher tier model at 80-GB, I believe they should have kept the full PS2 emotion engine on the higher end model at $599 (soon to be - I think) $499 which can justify the higher price compared to the $399 given the list of standard features already in place. Although I bought my PS3 solely for the purpose of playing PS3 games, watching Blu-ray, and running the Folding @ Home program, I still will utilize the PS2 backwards compatibility once in a while.

I think this is how it should have been broken down:

$399 PS3
40-GB
Blu-ray player
Wi-Fi
2 USB ports
w/out PS2 compatibility
Spider-man 3 BD movie (limited time - right?)
All black
etc.

$599/$499 PS3
80-GB
Blu-ray player
4 USB ports
PS2 compatibility
Wi-Fi
PS3 BD game (any title)
Chrome accents
etc.

What do you guys think?

I agree. I'm especially disappointed by the lack of the PS2 hardware on the 80g model. I haven't delved too much into the possible advantages of software emulation, but I figure that on a console, compatibility with the PS2 games would be easier with the actual hardware.

The reason that Sony took the emotion hardware engine out of the PS3's is to save cost... About $50 a system. And they are now passing those savings on to the consumer.

According to the consumer, price point was much more important than having every single feature. Besides, the 80 gig still has 80-90% backwards compatibility.

i'm sure they can make a firmware update to make it backwards compatible.

i mean, they already have programs that do that for NES, SNES, etc., that you can play on your computer.

ehhh!, no problem!

The 80GB is already at US$499 with Motorstorm packed in.

The next step is changing the color scheme so that the low-end and high-end PS3s can always be identified by their color. Crouching down or feeling up the USB ports is not a good thing.

The revolutionary step is to use the new rumble tech from Immersion or develop their own revolutionary rumble tech and make that controller mandatory.

The only thing that i am concerned about with the 40 gig is it only having 2 usb ports. It may effect future games. As of now it will only effect those that want to play Rock Band because that has 4 usb devices. So if it works, you would have to get a usb hub. It is not a big problem and I have my nice 60 gig. Just pointing out something i noticed.

No they can't, it's missing the PS2 GPU on the board that the emulation relys on.

And they're not going to because it's another selling point to spend another $100. It'll still play PS1 games because that's pure software emulation

Rockband is wireless on PS3 for the guitars. It's still good to go

And I played it today on the Rockband tour, and it was most excellent

Don't forget the memory card readers on the 60/80 GB PS3's.

Probably can just get a USB hub for extra ports...

so you admit emulation is possible. you contradicted yourself. and yes..it is possible, just very unlikely

and rockband and guitar hero both, if i remember correctly, need a usb dongle to work wirelessly

It is wireless with a 2.4ghz RF USB adaptor. Not the PS3's built in Bluetooth. So you would have 4 wired or wireless USB devices to plug in. Guitar 1 &2, Mic and Drums. A hub should work, but why should not NEED to buy a hub is kinda my point. I hope it doesnt effect possible future developement in a negitive way. Although I dont see myself playing a game that would require that, as I play solo most of the time. Just a concern.

Cause the PS3 really does make it look better (with the smoothing options and screen modes, et al), I run PS2 games all the time on it. In fact, I play them more than PS3 games (still waiting for the really good titles). I have so many to finish and so many to start that I really have to finish some of my older games before I buy more.
I use the BC all the time, love it, but can understand someone not using it.

I know about the newer ps3 model. I thought that sony was making the right move when they put out the 60 at launch time with ps1 and ps2 chipsets inside. Right there you have nearly full backwards compatiblity and you can add firmware updates to the machine. Microsoft went with software emulation for the xbox 360 and it cost them big because you had to check to make sure that xbox games would work. I understand that to reduce costs on the ps3, something had to go. That was the ps2 chipset. I think that we should view the 40 as either a stand alone blu-ray player or strictly a gaming machine that can only play ps3 games. As I have said before, if this is what it takes for sony to drive up sales on the playstation 3 and increase blu-ray sales, then by all means, lets get 40 GB ps3's out to anyone that doesn't already have a ps3 so that they can see what a great machine sony has created.

Default 40 Gb Ps3

Given the recent postings on the forum, I am assuming that sales of the newly revised PS3 @ 40 GB is off to a good start? Perhaps this has been the answer that "we" have been waiting in terms of increasing the PS3 user base along with introduction of BD-Player in people's homes? What do you guys think? Know many people that waited for the 40 GB PS3?

I don't know anyone that is getting a 40 GB ps3. I'll pass on the model. I believe that Kaz mentioned that the price was an issue for the 60 and the 80 was an issue so this model should be OK for those that can't spend more then $400 for a machine. This is only half the battle, we also need games for the ps3 which we have at this point. Combine games with the 40 GB ps3 and I don't see how Sony can lose. I'm wondering how Sony will compete against Microsoft this holiday season.
