Default Conan's new show will be on... TBS?

Monday's surprise announcement hit the same day O'Brien starts a two-month, nationwide comedy tour in Eugene, Ore., amid persistent reports that he was likely to claim Fox as his new late-night home.
Anyone else surprised? I thought for sure he'd be going to Fox. Cable seems like a big step down.

And if Leno is a jerk for making NBC consider pushing Conan back to midnight... what does that make Conan for bumping Lopez back?

This is a surprise but not a shock. Everyone talked about Fox but there was a lot of legal issues if Fox had tried to force their affiliates to show Conan instead of re-runs of syndicated shows, which the affiliates prefer because they get to keep all the advertising money. I think this is great for George Lopez. His show was getting virtually no buzz and the ratings weren't spectacular but now he'll have a strong lead-in.

I'm surprised by this, I thought Fox was the clear front runner, although I thought the local affiliates would prove troublesome, in the end, I thought they would fold.

I'm not too concerned about this as a "step backwards." Cable TV is totally different then it was 5-10 years ago. This will probably allow him to keep an earlier time slot, while keeping more of his "Late Night" shtick.

I'll be tuning in.

Uhh... Conan didn't want to move "The Tonight Show" back to midnight. His intentions were to maintain the legacy of that franchise at 11:35pm.

As far as this news... in Canada we just lost TBS in favour of Peachtree TV and in general this feels like a big letdown. I'm skeptical but they must have just dumped a ton of money on him.

Apples and oranges with regard to Leno. Leno's still a jerk.

I'm very very surprised; I thought he'd end up on a broadcast network. Maybe he likes the idea of cable which can be edgier than broadcast even at that hour.

I'll watch (even though I still detest TBS for stopping its Braves partnership ).

From what I've read, Lopez welcomed the change and actually called Conan and asked him to come to the network.

(I'm betting he is banking on Conan providing a HUGE carry over from Conan's show to his own.)

George's show isn't too bad. I've seen it a few times. It will be interesting to see what Conan does now he's on cable.

This is not going to help Conan's ratings at all. The viewer demographics for TBS are all wrong for Conan's traditional audience. It appears to be a play by TBS to change up its viewership and attract a hipper, more urban demo. Expect to see heavy promotion of other TBS shows on Conan now.

I have to believe Fox backed out of the deal with Conan. Rumors persist the affiliates simply did not want to give up the slots. Conan has trashed the cable networks for years in jokes. That was why he was so happy getting the Tonight Show, as it was a flagship show on a major network. I am sure the show will last years, but it will never be the cultural force Conan's old show was on NBC.

I agree. I thought the "who's blacker, Charles Barkley or Snoop" DNA test bit was pretty funny.

It was funny when the outcome was announced

He's also really good with his audience and with his skits. I think his interviews are only ok though. His best interview was with Jennifer Love Hewitt. Vajazzling FTW.

Big Jaw, still an ass****, and George is the one who asked Conan to come to the network.

Quote:
O'Brien, 46, entered negotiations with the network last week after Lopez called and asked him to join TBS' late-night lineup. "I can't think of anything better than doing my show with Conan as my lead-in," Lopez said in a statement. "It's the beginning of a new era in late-night comedy."

It was hard to do when Leno was making them all fall asleep.
