Default High Def Digest: Sony plans Blu-ray player price drop for Christmas

Not as much as I was hoping, but it's MSRP

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/news...n_the_Way/1140

Quote:
Glasgow's comments came during a twice-a-year media roundtable in New York, where according to published reports, the exec said that it expected prices for its standalone players to drop by 20 percent or more this holiday to around $399.
As for speculation that the company's standalone player prices could decline even further, Glasgow says don't count on it. TWICE Magazine quotes the exec as saying "I don’t expect it to go much lower than that."
Sony Blu-Ray @ $349 or under soon?
Hopefully they can get to the sub-$300 ($299 anyone?) which I think is psychologically where the bar is for quality HD experience in the larger public (and not crappy souped up DVD players).

I admit I was expecting more reactions on this, as it basically is Sony saying that they are on the ball, which is what a lot of people seemed to be hoping for

It is good news...I wonder if people already feel as though this has already happened because of the 40gb PS3? Overall this is a good direction and I'm surprised more people aren't talking about it too.

$399 players are a bit underwhelming when you see $99 HD-DVD players.

if both are new HD movie players that were just released as new technology why is one so cheap and the other is not..than look at who makes which players...gee there is only one HD DVD player that cheap and only one company makes HD DVD player's why does all the other companys make Blu-Ray players but not one other company make HD DVD players shown in any of the stores thats your answer..

2nd gen player that is 1080i and on the shelf since Jan 07 would hardly fill me with confidence. I'd rather spend $399 on quality. I am also sure there will be some kind of bundle of BDs.

if you look at it from being a cheapo I droped 900+ on my first Sony blu-ray player and 899$ for a ps3 + another 599$ for the extra ps3 ... so all this whining about I want dirt poor pricing is insane any blu-ray player now is a bargin for the amount of quality you get

The $99 players are GONE once all the A2's are sold out they won't start selling the A3's at the price forever. That would be stupid since they would be losing so much damn money.

Not really --> It's going in the right direction if all you are interested in is Blu-Ray. 99$ A2's will not last the end of November. Then it's 199$ A3's (except of course for 5 hours on black friday where the A3 will be sold for 169$).
No one is going to want to pay 199$ for the A3 when they saw all the hoopla about 99$ HD DVD players. The A3 will do the same thing the A2 did last year: gather dust and not sell. Toshiba will be liquidating the A3's next year but this time it will be in the liquidation bins for 49$ along with A30's for 59$ and A35's for 69$

For Xmas 2007, in the end, you have a 1080P 349$ (street) Blu-Ray standalone and a 399$ 1080P PS3 vs. a 199$ 1080i A3 which no one will want because, as of yesterday, the perceived value of HD DVD is 99$ = not too shabby.

I think it is good, once they sell them out and people find out that they don't play in 1080p, and once they find out that the triple Layer new HD Dvd that came out will not work with it... Ya I can see people losing a sh!t ton of respect for Toshiba in general with the 99 dollar HD DuD!

I notice a lot of miss leading crap that goes on in the HD Dvd camp once people in general find out they will lose repect, no likes to be mislead into buying anything. Think of it as a resturant you go in you eat you don't like it, most people don't complain they just don't come back. That is the kinda hole the HD Camp is building for themselfs

My Local Walmart never sold any HD-DVD players, but this morning they had 20 of them at 8:30 am. I stopped after work and they were all gone.

The 99 dollar sell off may back fire a bit when the A3 are more expensive during real X-mas shopping season.

They are.

The entire BDA are.

When someone goes "boo" and chicken littles run around the web screaming the sky is falling, the responsible corporate don't run around with them.

A few 10K $98 players aren't going to decide a damn thing.

you are right. I think though they will have a player in stock for 200 bucks until christmas. Most likely indefinately.

The A2 is done at 99, but the A3 will hang on at sub 200
