Ok so my wife got me this 32" tv for valentine's day. shortly after 30 days I noticed something strange about the TV. Best Buy wouldnt take the TV back so they sent out a geek squad tech and replaced the mainboard inside. A week later similar problem came back. They came back to check it out and they couldnt figure out how they going to fix this. Its more likely the panel Id say. They said since its under the manufacture warranty its their decision to decide if I get it repaired or replaced. Does this sound right? I mean I purchased the extended warranty through best buy. I would assume since its only been 2 months after I bought it they would immediately replaced the tv with twice the defect. Whats your opinion or story you probably had with best buy in the past?

Usually the paid for warranty supersedes OEM warranty as it does more than just cover basics(which is their major selling point), but that said I have never used BB warranty. I would call customer service and get the real story, sounds like it is a lemon and they should replace or refund ASAP, don't let them eat up more of your warranty time messing around.

Okay so here's the way the Best Buy warranty system works. There used to be two types of warranty, one was a product replacement plan and the other was the geek squad protection plan. The product replacement plan would allow you to swap your item out for another one in the store and if they didn't carry that exact item any longer, then they would give you a gift card for the entire purchase amount. For instance, if you bought a 60 gig PS3 for $600 and it broke, they would let you swap it out for another in the store. If the 60 gig is no longer being sold, then you get your $600 on a gift card then use 300 of it to buy a PS3 slim and you have roughly 300 left on the gift card. They allowed unlimited swapping during the term of the manufacturer warranty since they would just ship the console back for repair. If you traded it in after the manufacturer warranty expired, then that new trade in "fulfills" your product replacement plan and you can no longer get the product replaced any more. Best Buy no longer sells this warranty because people were using it for "free upgrades".
The other warrant (the one you got) is the geek squad black tie deal. That thing is just an extended repair warranty so if the product breaks, you either deal with the manufacturer directly (which may void your expensive extended warranty? Read the contract) or you do what they say. This warranty is a rip off and you should never bother getting it. That said - look into your state's lemon law. Most states have a law that dictates complete product replacement after it malfunctions a certain number of times. |

My guess is that since Best Buy already opened the thing up, you probably can't send it back to the manufacturer for repairs any more. Personally, I would just keep having Best Buy fix the thing. I mean, your girlfriend paid for the warranty after all. If for no other reason, I'd do it just to spite Best Buy, I'd make them eat as much expense as possible - particularly since they really should just replace the thing. I mean after three or so repairs they should just give you a new one, how much more is that stupid thing going to cost them to repair than to just replace it and not have to repair it again?

Edit: Nvm, I think my post applied to iPods instead of TVs
![]() In regards to the lemon policy, if they have to attempt 3 repairs, the 4th time means an actual full replacement. As a side, not sure why several people are posting in here to say this is in the wrong forum. It was said once, it does not need to be said again. ok don't listen to people who are guessing about something they have never used. if you bought the geek squad black tie protection plan, it goes into effect the day you bought the tv. it will cover anything except physical abuse for 4 years. the techs should fix the problem or replace the tv. simple as that. they will do what is least expensive of course (like any business), so you might get the tv repaired or replaced. but you shouldn't be in limbo.
disclaimer: i used to work at best buy, and i replaced a 65" tv with the black tie protection plan. |

Usually Best Buy will fix it 3 times but I'm pretty sure it has to be fixed the 3 times because of the same problem. Then on the 4th they will refund you the money to a GC.
There is times they will give you a refund right away with out it getting repaired 1 time it all depends on how much it cost to fix it. My buddy had the Laptop Warranty and the other warranty for it too. He dropped it a good 10feet and that thing was trash it ended up costing BB $900+ to fix it and he paid just about $1050 it came out to be close to $150 less to fix it then refund the money BB decided to fix it. Well...fixing it 2 times within 2 months after the purchase should consider already as a replacement right away. I would understand if this happens after a year when first purchased.
Geek Squad coming out today to run another test to check whats causing the problem. I highly doubt he will succeed. We'll see...More to come.... |
