Default Plasma Break In Period??

Just bought the Samsung PN58B850 and was wondering about the break-in period. I would like to start enjoying my TV now and not have to wait 100 hrs..
Q...if I only watch 16:9 content, with no static images and no black bars, etc...do I need to break it in? There will be no static content, therefore nothing to burn in, right? Am I right?

SHENANIGAN'S

That is a myth. Just get your Display (hate to call them TV's anymore) calibrated and you're off!!

Have fun but the 300 you spend to get it professionally calibrated is worth it IMO

Hey Thanks

Have it professionally calibrated? Can't I do the same thing with just adjusting/playing with all the settings?

Sure you can like I did at first but as you become a more serious enthusiast you want it to look the best as is intended

Bur in and break in are often confused

breakin discs all the phosphers to age the same and display the same color as opposed to any other content. when the screen is all white, the blue, red, green, grey, etc etc. this allows for maximum display consistancy and allows for a better calibration IMO.

I got a 50" plasma a couple weeks ago and I have not been worrying at all about break-in. I watch whatever I want (ESPN vertical bars, 2.35:1 horizontal bars, sports tickers, console games) and I am not having any issues whatsoever.

I have a plasma and did a break in period for about 10 hrs or so. I do alot of gaming and movie watching and I have no problems with "Burn in". I do see some image retention which is common and goes away the second something else goes on the screen. I would say your fine and start enjoying...

The reason you don't have any problems with your Panny is because they break all their TV's now before shipping them. My salesman went to a covention and the Panny reps told them that they do it for all their models, a 100 hours If I recall correctly.

Default break in period if no static images

going back to my initial point - if I never expose the TV to any static images, a break in period - even if set to TORCH mode - would not be necessary, am I correct?

Dude, break-in periods are normal for Plasma panels, and here's why: When a plasma panel is manufactured, phosphoric dust is sprayed onto the electrode panel. Over time, the electrical charge given off the electrodes harden that phosphoric dust. Your break-in period is the period in which that dust hardens. I have a PN58B860 (virtually the same panel as you) and have been watching it for well over two months now and FINALLY am not noticing retained images after a period of up to a minute. What I do to help my panel is I went to this website, http://www.webapalooza.com/plasma/ and downloaded his slides and play them on my panel via a small thumb drive. I set my sleep timer and let it run in a slideshow until the timer goes out. I love what it does for my screen.

Thanks
I went to the site and downloaded the software.
May I ask your picture settings before and after the breakin period?

Good, I hope it works for you the same as it has for me. In fact, its running on my TV right now! Yeah, I'll give you my settings, no problem.

--Picture menu
Mode: Movie
Cell Light: 10
Contrast: 84
Brightness: 54
Sharpness: 0
Color: 54
Tint: G50/R50

Advanced settings submenu
Black tone: Off
Dynamic contrast: Off
Gamma: 0
Color space: Auto
Flesh tone: 0
Edge enhancement: Off
xvYCC: Off

White balance submenu
R-Offset: 24
G-Offset: 25
B-Offset: 25
R-Gain: 29
G-Gain: 20
B-Gain: 19

Picture options submenu
Color tone: Warm2
Size: Screen Fit or 16x9
Digital NR: Off
HDMI black level: Normal [grayed out]
1080 Full HD Motion Demo: Off
Film mode: Auto1*
Blue only mode: Off

*Auto1 setting is for any of my sources that are not 1080/24p...in this case I use the Cinema Smooth setting.

These are settings that I made using my calibration equipment here in the home. I work for an A/V dealer (not Best Buy) and I have the optic sensor, the Spears and Munsil test patterns disc and the software to interpret it all.

If there is anything else I can do for you, just let me know. Enjoy!

I have the exact same TV and I waited almost 300hrs to have it calibrated. the pro iSF tech that did mine recommended a minimum of 150hrs.

i noticed a bunch of you mention that you have samsung plasma b850+ model tvs. thats also one im looking at picking up. given that youve had it for a while.. how is the performance on it? notice any loss of blacks like the 09 pannys? also during the 100 hours im suppose to be 'breaking it in' before calibrating.. what settings am i suppose to use, the default ones? one of the preset modes.. ie: echo, movie?

Yeah, man, for the break-in I have used the color images from this website http://www.webapalooza.com/plasma/ and I run it for three hours at the end of every night. Until that point, I was just using the standard movie mode on my TV. When the slide show runs, I have the TV set to run its hottest torch mode...helps it break in faster by running the TV harder. Be sure you get a warranty with it.

"Break-in" will not prevent IR or Burn-in. The reason for Break-in period is to age your set faster to get it calibrated. If you don't want to get it calibrated there is ZERO reason to do the Break-in slides.

Just enjoy your TV.

Thanks for the settings - I do prefer Standard Mode, though - Movie mode seems too dull...
Q: How do you log your hours? Does the TV have some sort of memory or just pen and paper??

I also notice when the screen is completely black, it is not 100% uniform - see some wide bands of various degress of darkeness - is this normal?
