Default Need help with setup

My receiver keeps powering off after seconds or close to a minute every time i try to play my ipod or a movie. I have it on the floor, so theres no overheating issues. I checked the wiring, it all seems ok to me. Checked each speaker to listen for sound, they all work The receive is only a year old and worked fine about 5 months ago.... just hooked it up now again in my new apartment.
Any suggestions?

Can you turn it right back on and use it right away? Or do you have to wait a bit before it's usable again? Is there any indication of the reason why it might take longer before it shuts off? Do louder songs cause it to cut out faster? Have you tried unplugging everything except the bare essentials, a speaker and a source?

Is it giving you any sort of message on the display? Also, please post the brand and model number of the receiver. Might help us to research and troubleshoot the possible problems.

only when trying to use the ipod input and DVD?? Do you have an ipod dock, which input?

have you tried unplugging most of everything....then testing, with a single speaker, with new wire-run (temporary) then testing your input cables, one at a time?

strange that both ipod and DVD.....do you have any other inputs connected? do they work or same problem?

where was it stored for the 5 months of non-usage? was it stationary or mobile?

It does not give me any error message, it basically just powers off. And then i can power it back on right away. I plug my ipod directly in with the USB cable.. basically all i use is my ipod and dvd with surround sound. Haven't figured out how to get it working with the tv yet. The receiver is Pioneer VSX.. ill have to look at it to see which VSX it is.

It was stored stationary when i wasnt using it. I got new cable wire from monoprice, so the wire should be ok. Ill try testing one speaker at a time.. haven't tried that.

How closely did you check the wires?
This is usually caused by a single strand of speaker wire, touching something it shouldn't. You said you've just set it back up, and it's started doing it...........
I would retwist each speaker wire at both ends, and carefully insert it back into place. It's so easy for a single strand to get caught, and pushed to one side, when inserting the wire.

Since you've just hooked it back up, and it's suddenly started doing this, it sounds like this is what it is. There's always a chance that something is wrong with the receiver. If you're positive it's not a frayed wire, there's a chance it's still under warranty, so you should probably take it in for repairs.

agreed, emoxley has a great point. I hooked up my DVR using a "tested" RCA video cable. then had picture problems. un-screwed the connector cap to find a tiny wire reaching from the positive to the negative...strangely, that caused a problem. moved the tiny wire back, things are good again.

just pluggin and un-plugging the RCA a couple times and the wire made the jump. darn you Monster Cable!! (it was free!!)

ok so probably the best bet is to start with one speaker, test it, then keep putting in an additional speaker and testing till they all work?

So you unplugged everything, then started hooking up speakers one at a time....now when it shuts down, you still get the sub?? With the last speaker you hooked up....before that, was it working?

example: first hooked up front left....things were fine.....next connected front right....things were fine.....hooked up center...fine....hooked up sub...fine.....hooked up left-rear.....fine.....hooked up right-rear....shut down....all but sub???

Which source are you using? Ipod, DVD or did you to try both? Did you hook either of them up differently? Did the system ever work all 6 speakers on one source, then shut down with a different source?

I know, we've got more questions than you do!!

Do you have a passive sub and are using the receiver to power it?
