The number of speaker manufacturers in posts #1 and #2 has surpassed 400.

I have a feeling that there are another few speaker manufacturers out there. Please keep them coming.

Unfortunately, The Speaker Company has closed their business and their web site no longer works.

How about some hand crafted speakers from South Africa.

I just found this website. I would like to ask a question. My husbands Birthday is coming up and I wanted to know where I could find good speakers for watching sports game? He watches soccer most of the time. Thank you

Locally, go to Best Buy or other audio/video stores.

If you want to buy speakers online, you can check the following:

I would have to say that speakers all have a different sound. I find that a neutral speaker is best overall, and something that is linear, meaning there is little diviation in any sound frequency, so highs don't overtake mid-range and bass doesn't bloat over the highs or mid frequencies....

I know that is more then you ever thought and not the answer your looking for.... and your question is simple, so is my answer:

speakers all sound different from one another. Most speakers will be excellent for Sports.

On the low end, Polks offer a good sound that is easily enjoyable for the average listener. However up from that Energy, PSB, Kef, Monitor Audio, Klipsch, Jamo. But the sound your husband will like the most is hard for anyone to guess...

For you simple pleasures, I think Jamo would be a great investment into speakers that will offer greater bang for the buck. Easy to listen to all day, won't make your ear tired, but have great detail and depth. However what he will like and enjoy the most is only answerable by him, after hes heard several speaker.

What is your budget? Does he have speakers already? Does he have a receiver to hook the speakers up to?

See these examples below I wil group them into categories so you know what should match to what... click on the link to see the speakers

Concert series-very good quality to price ratio
C400 center channel
C401 bookshelf speakers
C403 Bookshelf
C405 floorstanders

E series, these are nice speakers as well. Below the C series.
E660 Floorstanders
E7 Center channel

S series-Entry level, but effective
S 406 5 speaker package

hope you find that helpful, and remember you need to have 2 front speaker and a center channel, the fronts can be either floor standing speaker or bookshelfs you put on a speaker stand or bookshelf, if you want rear speakers, bookshelfs are an excellent option.

Remember you don't have to go with any of my suggestions, just they are an easy speaker to suggest as a blind purchase. Also if he has a speaker and receiver setup already, we wouldn't want to go to speakers that are lesser quality then what he currently has. Any additional info you can provide is excellent.

NO!

Go and audition some speakers. Does the human voice sound clear and intelligeable? If yes, then that speaker may be a candidate.

Almost all speakers can work for sports. It all depends on your budget and whether you want to buy only two speakers or a whole home theater setup (5 or 7 speakers and a subwoofer). If you plan to buy only two speakers, buy the bigger tower (floor standing) speakers. If you plan to buy two smaller bookshelf speakers, put them on a stand and also buy a subwoofer to give you the lower frequency sound. Does your husband have a receiver? He may need it to properly power and distribute the speakers. I suggest that you visit a local Best Buy or other local A/V dealer and check some of their offerings. You should be able to find speakers from the following reputable companies that won't break the bank.

Definitive Technology
Energy
Infinity
Jamo
JBL
Klipsch
Polk Audio
PSB

Came across this company in (of all places) a liquidator. They look pretty decent with aesthetics to match!

Thank you John. I added it to the list. We have over 430 speaker companies on the list. I am sure some of them have gone out of business, but I am too lazy to check.

Welcome Justnate!

I'm sure that Big Daddy would be happy to start a Wharfedale speaker thread, although you could very well start one of your own. There are a few members here who own them, but they aren't well-known to many of our members.

I own Totem Acoustic speakers and they are well-known, yet few members here own them....maybe 2 or 3.

Hi Al,

I've been wanting to listen to the Lafleur's, but haven't found a dealer local to me yet. Something tells me we're going to be hearing about their wares in the future.

Some of the manufactures in the list are brands that are sold in the back of a van in the parking lot! They dont deserve to be there.
