Talking Conan O'Brien to break silence on '60 Minutes' May 2nd

Conan O'Brien to break silence on '60 Minutes'

Quote:

Conan O'Brien is nearly ready -- and legally permitted -- to talk.

The late-night host will give his first interview since departing NBC's "The Tonight Show" to CBS news magazine "60 Minutes."

O'Brien will break his silence on Sunday, May 2 in an interview with veteran corespondent Steve Kroft.

He's not wasting much time -- O'Brien agreed to not give any interviews until after May 1 in his exit deal with NBC.

Those looking for O'Brien to come out swinging might be disappointed, however, as the host will still be prohibited from disparaging NBC (at least, that's assuming he wants to keep his enviable severance package -- NBC would gladly take a few insults in exchange for its tens of millions back).

Also, because of the restrictions CBS cannot promote the segment in advance with clips of O'Brien talking during the interview (there's creative ways around that, though, a network can easily build anticipation for the event without footage -- witness ABC handling the final season premiere of "Lost").

I guess that most of Team Coco knows he's gonna be doing a late night talk show on TBS? I think it starts in November, at 11:00pm.

Tom hanks was one of his first guests and wanted to give him a nickname so he coined the name Coco which Conan wanted to quash but it stuck and he embraced it but the fans embraced it more so.

I never thought when Tom called him CoCo it would catch like wildfire, but we are sure ran with it lol. He still hates it, but it makes for a catchy slogan for web campaigning and merchandising in his support.

The name came from one of the Twitter Tracker segments. Hanks repeated the name, because he thought it was funny.

That's right but Hanks really got the ball rolling on it.

Yeah me too, and like the article said since they can't promote the show due to conan's contract I figured It was my civic duty as a member of Team CoCo to make sure everybody here knows.

Some quotes from tonight's episode.

Quote:
On making the decision to leave NBC ...

"It just felt like the tone went very quickly from, "Take your time, we understand this is a tough decision," to-- (snaps his fingers) you know, "Let's go." and that probably helped me a little bit feel like, "You know what? This environment doesn't feel right and I've been with these people a long time. And I don't like-- I really don't like the way this is going. And when it started to get toxic and I started to feel that I'm not sure these-- people even really want me here. Let's just-- let's just-- I can't do it."

On how he's felt since...

"I went through some stuff. And I got very depressed at times. It was like a marriage breaking up suddenly, violently, quickly. And I was just trying to figure out what happened. When we started putting this tour together, I started to feel better almost immediately. And then this there is this, there is almost no better antidote to what I've just been through than to do this every night."

On Jay Leno saying they both got screwed...

"How did he get screwed again? Explain that part to me. I'm sorry. Jay's got The Tonight Show. I have a beard and an inflatable bat. And I'm touring city to city. Who can say who won and who lost? I'm laughing 'cause crying would be sad."

Oh man I got screwed. Had my timer set for 7pm when this was on, and The Pacific had to go and have it's first 5 minute runover and it canceled my timer for this, damn you HBO. If I had known that I would have just recorded The Pacific at 10pm instead.

Awesome interview! Conan didn't use any talk around strategies like Leno did in his interview with Oprah.

Best line:

"Leno says you got screwed............and he got screwed."

"How'd he get screwed again?"

You're coming through in the clutch is streets ahead.

He should keep rocking the beard on his new show in the fall. After the strike when he came back with it, he looked a lot better before he shaved it off. More relaxed and comfortable.

Split by segment on here as well: http://tv.gawker.com/5529348/the-ret...yline=true&s=i

Gawker did a fantastic job covering the Late Night War in the winter, not trying to push their site too blatantly but they seem on the ball with TV issues.
