I remember when HDTV 1st came out there was also EDTV (Enhanced Digital TV)? What was it and where did it go?

It's actually Enhanced Definition TV. And yes, it is 480p. Before 720p/1080i TVs became widespread, many CE manufacturers tried to market these televisions as if they were the next step in the evolution of resolutions. They never really caught on because they provided minimal improvement in picture quality. Plus it was only a matter of time before they became somewhat obsolete due to the impending arrival of true hi-def sets.

Its sad because I know somebody that has one and when you look at it when it is off it looks just like an HDTV. But when you put it on I notice its not HDTV but my friend thinks its an HDTV because it flat and wide. He was fooled into getting one thinking it was HD.

That said, they benefited from HD still, because of HD's Higher color and contrast abilities. (just couldn't display as many pixels) An HD broadcast scaled to 480p looked infinitely better than the same movie from a DVD on an EDTV. (Trust me, me and a few friends Had ED plasma's back in the day ![]() Honestly they aren't too bad, and I've seen some EDTV's that made some HDTV's look bad. It's all in the Brightness/Contrast levels, Scaling etc. Bonus to an EDTV: DVD's look probably better on them than anything, and you don't need an upscaler ![]() Last edited by BTBuck1; 11-06-2007 at 05:14 AM. |

I always felt bad for the people purchasing these, which were mostly cheap plasmas. They had the 'it' factor by being thin, but other than that they were a pretty big waste of money for as short a shelflife they had. |

Thanks Fixed Quote:
a 42" HD plasma (only 720p), at the time was near $8000+ I got my ED plasma with better contrast ratio and brightness, for about $2800 on employee discount. Since at that time, no HD gaming systems existed really (most xbox games were 480p) as were GCN, ps2 etc. And DVD and there was very little HD programming, at the time (BD & HDDVD never even heard of it then) it seemed like a good idea. I got a couple years out of it and sold it for $1100 Last edited by BTBuck1; 11-06-2007 at 05:21 AM. |
