How to Capture and Backup HD-DVD Movies with an Xbox 360 + HD DVD Drive + PC

Quote:
Jake Ludington: “One of the key disadvantages of HD-DVD is no convenient way to make back-up copies of the discs. The HD-DVD spec supports what's known as a managed copy, but so far none of the HD-DVD disks I own have this feature. If I want to watch my HD content somewhere other than my Xbox, or if I want to backup my $30 investment, at this point, I have to create my own solution. Until someone starts giving me managed copies, I'm making copies of my HD-DVDs to watch them where I want to using an analog solution. Following the guidelines presented here, you can use an Xbox 360 with the HD-DVD drive and a PC to make copies of HD-DVD movies.”

After a quick once over, it definitely looks like a workable solution to an ugly problem. The only catch is, you'll need just about all the cutting-edge hardware you can get your hands on, plus massive amounts of quick write storage drives. And then there's the tricky part of compressing the high-def video into a more manageable format (which Jake doesn't cover).

Seriously, though, it's probably more trouble than its worth. Anyone know why we haven't seen managed copies yet? Is it a new disabled feature for our protection? [sarcasm/joke] Possible answer: We won't see managed copy functionality until Intel Viiv, HD DVD equipped Windows Vista PCs launch.

Great job M$! Get ready to see dozens of ripped HD-DVDs on Blu-ray! Say two- or more-in-one lossless sets, not to mention BD100/200...

the only problem is that it cost about the same for the blank disc as the one wih the movie already pressed.

You can technically do the same thing with any Blu-ray player. Until they lock down Component, it will continue to send unprotected 1080i signal which can be captured.

Exactly.

ICT here we come!

BTW, this is a significant amount of hardware cost. Also, the movies come off uncompressed and will need to be recompressed to go onto a fresh disc, adding more compression artifacts and taking a LOT of time.

^^ Exactly.

This is why I know some people get annoyed, but component video is a think of the past and no one should invest any more money towards it.

If you have older HDTVs without digital video...time to start making plans for upgrades.

Not a question of IF, but WHEN the ICT flag and the rest of it get thrown down.

This is going to make the studios enable the ICT flag much sooner than they anticipated, and there goes the usefulness of the X360 HD-DVD drive.

Yep. It doesn't kill HD DVD. It means ICT could be used in quick order.

That that would kill the HDMI-need-is-a-myth add-on.

Apparently this guy has never heard of BitTorrent. Only a few people need the hardware. And THAT is what scares the studios.

One of my goals is to build a PC capable of uncompressed HD capture.

Maybe I am the one! Hahah...

Question

So what kind of HD do you get from Xbox360/HD-DVD then, if ICT is enabled the last HD feature flies away?

Increasing a bitrate within advanced codecs will do it good

Any title without ICT remains without ICT. But, the AACS license requires players to honour the ICT flag. If it is present the player is allowed to output a maximum of 960x540p resolution over analog outputs. So all titles in the future with the flag will be sub-HD and at the mercy of the quality of the downconversion, at this point untested on any player, as far as I know.

Let's be clear, ICT would be a disaster for a lot of users, on both formats. Many using component output. It will result in a lot of anger.

It would be particularly devestating to the Xbox 360 add-on. Nobody could use it for HD output because there is no digital output option.

Default Sorry to rain on your parade, but..

This is a little bit FUDdy. You can copy Blu-Ray AND HD-DVD discs from any player by doing the same thing. At least until they stop allowing 1080i from going over component.

PS3 allows 1080 component and no BDs have been copied this way so far. The reason is that non-commercial discs are allowed for 1080-component, the algorithm is as follows (mainly for HDCP-enabled devices):
check if disc is copyrighted...
if false, allow component
if true, allow HDCP-compliant output only and hence, don't care about ICT

Xbox case (as it don't have HDCP pipe but want to play 1080):
check if disc is copyrighted...
if false, do 1080 over analogs
if true, check if ICT flag is present...

if ICT, downsize and output
if no ICT, do 1080 over analogs

I've been watching BDs on my PS3 in 1080i over component, just like you can do with HD-DVD on the 360.
