I didn't see this when it came out. I was 8; if it wasn't Star Wars, it was dead to me. But you couldn't avoid the music. And I can very clearly remember standing in a theatre lobby that holiday season, looking up at the freestanding display of the road and the horizon, and thinking it looked quite an ominous film; I don't think I learned otherwise until I was in my 20s. Looking forward to this BD.

This is one of those I cannot wait for. It will be a great selling catalog title and might get some studios to open up abit more.

For those of you too young to remember... When the Mother ship first appears, you can see an R2D2 lit from behind (mounted upside down). The model makers did it on purpose as a tip of the hat to the Star Wars guys. Have fun looking for it...

A snippet from AICN following a set visit to the new Indiana Jones movie....

"...I got to say hi to Laurent Bouzereau, who runs all of Spielberg’s DVD stuff. I got to chat him up a bit on the WAR OF THE WORLDS set visit and he struck me as being just as cool of a guy now as he did then. Just laid back, loving what he’s doing. We talked a little about the CLOSE ENCOUNTERS Blu-Ray release and he said it’s amazing, the HD transfer absolutely gorgeous."

Too bad Harry, founder of the site and a huge HDDVD supporter, won't be able to watch it.

I will have to look for this when I get my copy. As many times as I've seen this I should have picked it up. Great now I won't get to sleep thinking about this! Thanks a lot.

Spielberg and Lucas hedged their bets by swapping out a % of profits from Close Encounters and Star Wars. Lucas feared that Star Wars wouldn't go over well and thought that Close encounters would be much bigger. Spielberg had no doubt that both would do well plus he is a big fan of Lucas' work.
I am so ready for this one.

Thumbs up The CE3K Thread

I just finished watching the Director's Cut of Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and I can honestly say that it has never looked better. In all seriousness, some scenes look as if they could have been shot yesterday. The picture clarity is amazing and colors vivid. The presentation is jaw-dropping from beginning to end, it makes you wonder why all films can't look this good.

The first thing that most will notice is the grain - the picture is thick with it. After watching this last week on an LCD and today on my SXRD, I can easily say that LCD does show more grain. My SXRD was more forgiving to the picture (even with DNR turned off). But I don't care if you absolutely hate grain, this is a landmark film that looks simply amazing.

If there hasn't been a title to get you excited about Blu-ray, this is the title.

Here are two screen shots from the film directly from my TV. Enjoy.

In case those stop working:

i never watched the movie and was thinking about picking it up and taking a chance on it. i would guess that around 40 of my blu-ray purchases have been on titles that i never watched previously and until i get a few movies that i dont like and get pissed that i wasted money, i dont see any point in stopping.

Lucky dog, I can't wait to get this. How is the SQ? For me, in this movie, the SQ is probably as important as the PQ. I love the sound effects/soundtrack in this movie.
