They're not horror movies. Using that phrase to describe his films is embarassing to real horror films, such as Alien, The Shining, The Exorcist, Psycho, and even recent horror films like The Orphanage.

Oh, if by "more" you mean Cabin Fever, well that doesn't really constitute a range of directing, when his other two films are Hostel and Hostel II, which are widely referred to as torture porn. Just because Roth hates the term doesn't mean it isn't fitting.

Based on the premise of The Last Exorcist, I think we'll be getting something much different. It seems as though it'll be a more raw version of the exorcism premise.

Looks pretty cool. Maybe Eli Roth will be in the movie as the priest's assitant to beat the demon with a baseball bat after in comes out of the girl

Really? There's nothing horrifying about being helpless and tortured? I find that MUCH scarier than (possibly) fake things like aliens, ghosts and possessions. You may night like the sub genre but to claim it's not horror is absolute bullshit.

And you forgot about Thanksgiving and Endangered Species. They aren't out yet, but are in production.

I didn't forget about them when they haven't been released yet..."production" means very little considering many films are in production for a long time.

I have every right to claim it's not horror and I'm certainly not the only one to hold that opinion; it's pretty common.

Eli Roth is scaring people again.

Now best known for acting alongside Brad Pitt in "Inglourious Basterds," Roth's initial claim to fame was directing splatter fests like "Cabin Fever" and "Hostel."

Roth put on his producer cap for “The Last Exorcism,” due out in theaters at the end of the month.

The horror film, shot from a skeptic’s perspective in the style of a “faux documentary,” is centered on Reverend Cotton Marcus who is raised a true believer in the evangelical faith and spent 25 years conducting exorcisms he’s known were not real. But as he performs one last exorcism on Louisiana farm girl Nell in an attempt to release the guilt he’s been bearing from all the years of deceit, Marcus is confronted for the first time with maniacal forces.

“I loved the idea that it was a film about debunking exorcisms, showing that it’s all fake, and slowly realizing there are forces far greater than your comprehension and that you shouldn’t mess with them,” Roth said.

And it seems a number of Americans concur. A 2005 Gallup poll found that 42 percent of people believe in possession by the devil, and many across the world are taking action. Father Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican's exorcist-in-chief, has performed the ritual more than 40,000 times.

“Throughout the film the question is: Is it supernatural or is it human evil? Is Nell schizophrenic or is she possessed? That to me is the interesting question,” director Daniel Stem said. “The film is about faith, the role faith plays in your life and what that does to you – how it can help you, and how it can destroy you.”

“We wanted our exorcism to feel raw, real, and fresh, like you are truly in the room with someone who could be possessed,” Roth added. “We didn’t use any makeup, CGI, or special effects in her (Ashley Bell, who plays Nell) scenes, it’s all her doing everything you see, down to the bulging veins on her neck and the back bends.”

Yikes.

I saw it at the Montreal Fantasia festival last month and was pretty underwhelmed by it.

I thought it was pretty good until the ending which left me speechless and not in a good way

Click the spoiler tag if you wanna know what it is :P

[Show spoiler]During the entire movie it kept on tethering on the is this or isnt this real, and then at the end when you see these cult-like people (which were never mentioned at all during the movie) come up and kidnap the girl and take her baby away and throw it in the fire and then you see this 'devil' like fire shape only to have the camera guy run for his life and get killed by those said cult people which also included the brother/son.

It just felt so out of place and when it abruptly cut to credits i said to myself 'what? that's it?'

I know they couldn't really spoonfeed us answers since it's a 'documentary' where they just 'found' the tape of the events but still...

But yeah up until that point it had some pretty creepy stuff and i really liked the priest dude.

Sounds like the kind of movie I won't get unless it comes out with an alternate cut with a different ending.

Well, I've heard some people are fine with the ending, it's just the ending goes down a very singular path by the end.

I'm going to have to youtube the ending then, if it's this polarizing, I only like horror if it actually scares me, there's hot chicks running around or it's intentionally campy or all of those.

It is creepy and scary, just the ending might seem weak.

Just got back from seeing it. 3/5 for me. Very slow, which doesn't bother me, and I actually didn't even mind the ending at all, it felt very
[Show spoiler] House of the Devil
. I don't know, it just felt like it was missing something that could have made it better. Maybe if they just went for it a little more with an R rating.

Just got back from seeing it. In a word: horrible. 1/5 for me. And no that's not an overstatement.

The screening I went to was maybe 80%+ people under 21 since it's rated PG-13 rather than R. For the first time in ages I heard a large number of people actually booing when it was over and on my way out I heard nonstop negative remarks about how much the film (especially the ending) sucked. And I absolutely agree, it did suck.

I'm absolutely stunned the critics gave this film mostly positive reviews. This is one of those films I would have expected a score of <25% on Rotten Tomatoes.

I personally LOVED it. I thought the ending was just fine and over all, it was a very well put together film.

I also appreciated it not having excessive gore or extreme profanity. Very refreshing for a change.

I can guess that this movie will be bad just from its title.
"The Last Exorcism", what?
Thats sounds so childish and wrong.
How can they be sure that this is the last exorcism?
