Exclamation Mass Effect the movie.

Hey,

This is an awesome one.

Film Rights to a game = A movie. And Legendary pictures is on top of the game.

Quote:
Legendary Pictures has optioned the film rights to EA and Bioware’s extremely successful video game series Mass Effect. According to the press release, the project will also fall under Legendary’s co-production and co-financing agreement with Warner Bros., who will distribute the film worldwide. The producers are in discussions with Mark Protosevich (I Am Legend, Thor) to draft a screenplay based on the epic science fiction game series. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce the film with Avi and Ari Arad. BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk will serve as executive producers, as will Mass Effect executive producer Casey Hudson.

If you’re a fan of the game, you should be very happy Legendary Pictures landed the rights as they’re a great movie company with a solid track record (The Dark Knight, 300, Clash of the Titans, The Hangover and Watchmen). More after the jump – including the E3 trailer from 2006 that explains the game.
Source.

Enjoy.

Happy my old boss isn't doing this one. Then again, happy my old boss isn't making video game adaptions any more.

This is amazing news and can't wait. Very happy.

Now all we need is BioWare's other classic game, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR), to be developed for a movie. But that will sadly never happen, as George Lucas would never allow it.

Whats Insane is that Mass Effect 3 is going to be announced at E3 2010 this June and possibly being multi-platform. So PS3 users will have a chance to play Mass Effect.

I guess I should pick up the games soon

From what I have heard, the games are great and really lend themselves to the cinematic format.

Thanks for the news Stewie!

the cool thing about KOTOR is that the story was so expansive, you could have broken it up into a great trilogy. I think everyone who's ever played that game has daydreamed of it happening someday. But as you said, it won't.

Great news here, though.

No, it is a real shame because me and my bother most think it would make a maginficent film. I do remember reading a few years ago that for conference for the upcoming Star Wars Live-Action television series, fans were asking GL about other potential TV series and someone asked "what about a live-action series based on Kinghts of the Old Republic/" and Lucas replied "it's a possiblity". But don't hold your hopes up since that was 2006, I think, and GL has very likely forgotten about it. Until the upcoming MMO, The Old Republic, comes out, there is no chance of an Old Republic era film or TV series.

But anyway, back to Mass Effect. What I'm curious about is how the producers will work with the story, because the game is an RPG, so how is it going to work?

Fantasticular news! Protosevich better immerse himself in the games before he starts writing, as the story is layered more than a greazy burrito.

For the love of God.....please.....please casting crew do not pick Sam "Talent Like Cardboard" Worthington to play Commander Shepard!

They truly are vegeta88. 'Epic' is the perfect word to describe these games. The storyline is so engrossing. Best thing is you can import your saved character from Mass Effect 1 into the sequel and the choices you made will have an impact on the story, as well as in the 3rd one.

If the movie follows the story of the first game (It could end up being a side story, who knows?), then it's not hard to bring out the basic plot which was about a Spectre turned rogue, the first human Spectre placed in charge of going after him, the discovery of a Prothean artifact which burns information into Shepard's head, and you know the rest (rescuing Liara, confronting her mother on Noveria, blowing up Saren's lab, Reaper, Vigil... blah blah blah).

Anyway, if there's one thing I hope gets cut from the story, it's the Thorian. Like the giant squid in Watchmen, that thing just wouldn't sell on the big screen. They should write it so that the Prothean info Shepard obtains simply takes time to process and reveals itself in pieces as the story goes along.

They'll probably ignore most sub-plots and just stick with the main parts like Gabriel360 listed. It'd be next-to-impossible to include every 'great'/'memorable' thing or character you came across in the game, but it'd be nice for once to have a video game adaptation load it up to the brim.

We'll see how Thor turns out, but I wasn't a fan of I Am Legend at all. I know he had nothing to do with the horrid special effects, but the script was lame (or just plain boring?) enough.

Any updates on this? I can't wait even though I hoped they would use a female Shep for the movie.

Only thing I can think of is the writers being smart and going for a better ending.

that's for sure, hollywood would've never let a dark sci-fi ending happen in an action sci-fi film

I'm talking about the fans and if they will show for another mass effect movie/game etc

As much as I would LOVE to see this happen it cannot happen in today's climate.

A movie couldn't touch the game. The first one anyway, I hated 2 and refuse to play 3. Mass Effect is one of, if not the best, game I have ever played and a movie couldn't do it justice.
