Great topic! I love it. Especially since no one that I know comes anywhere close to my ‘movie’ collecting habits. I started buying Blu-Rays last November and currently am at 140 titles. My wish list is almost depleted and there isn’t too much coming out over the next 3-4 months that I’m super excited about. That’s ok though because I’ve spent around $1100 on Blu-Rays over the past 7 months. (Average cost per disc is $8.62 – Thank you Hollywood Video for helping bring that down significantly).
I started with a rule that I would only buy movies that I don’t have (no double dipping), but that quickly went out the window. My current rules are: 1. I want the movie and have either seen it or want to see it bad enough that I’m willing to risk a blind buy. I rarely go to the movies anymore because I can buy the blu-ray cheaper than it cost me to see the movie in the theater (I see around 6 movies a year now max) with the g/f. Plus I love my home theater set up. 2. The movie is $14.99 or less (preferably $9.99 or less). 3. It’s worth having on Blu-Ray. Personally for me that means PCM/uncompressed audio. The audio tracks are more important to me than the PQ. You can’t upconvert audio to reference quality and I get the most enjoyment from the audio now. I still love great PQ, but AQ does more for me. 4. The genre is Sci-Fi, Action, Epic drama, historical drama, horror. I don’t personally see the need to buy Comedy on Blu-Ray. Just like I don’t feel the need to go see a comedy in the theater. 5. I won’t buy anymore unless I’ve watched half of what I own. I just ordered 7 more this week, which means I need to watch 7 more before I can buy another. This may seem like a strange rule, but I personally felt like I was collecting to collect, not to have stuff to watch. I feel like some I’ve bought I just bought to buy something. I have about 7 in my collection that I have no doubt saying I shouldn’t have bought. Side-note rant: This past weekend I went through my collection of DVDs and pulled out the ones that I had re-bought on Blu-Ray. There were 32. I took them to FYE and they priced them out between a penny and $2 each in trade credit. They then turn around and sell them for 650% (or more) mark up. I told the guy I would rather burn them on principle alone (which I would never do) than trade them in. I asked my friends if they were interested in any of them and if they were I would rather sell them to them for a couple bucks each. Out of 32 only one got bought. LOL. I knew they would have little residual value, but I was shocked that they were essentially worth nothing. I’ll take them up to the cottage and leave them there, but it did change the way I now think about double-dipping. Don’t get me wrong I got a lot of mileage out of my old DVD over the past ~10 years, but I think I’ll be more critical before ‘upgrading’ others unless they are one of my top 25 movies or have a HUGE jump up in AQ/PQ. Of course I’m sure this will all change. Sorry for the long post. I guess I could have just said: 1. I like/want the movie 2. It’s less than $14.99 but preferably less than $9.99 ( I will buy used from some online retailers) 3. I feel like I’ll watch it more than once. |

My guidelines are: the overall price, and how much I or I think I'll enjoy the movie.
The highest I'm willing to pay for a Blu Ray is $15.99, there are expectations of course, but it's mainly $15.99. Anything over then it's usually a rent first. The movie also has to be something that I'm going to be rewatching more than just once or twice. If it's going to be a one time deal then I'll stick to renting it. |

I have my master list (both available and hope to be released titles).
I read all reviews paying attention to quality of transfer and audio. Lastly, I wait for MAJOR price drops then pull the trigger. No impulse buys or blind buys for me -- burned on a few DVD's in the past. |

It's a simple yet complicated process of making plans to purchase a particular blu-ray in the near future. Decide at that moment in time that I really don't need it. And wait for the next one to come along.
I am strongly considering Minority Report or Saving Private Ryan, but I've made it thus far without them, so, I probably won't buy it. |

I usually just look through the deal section on the forum and the ticker at the top of the site, or look at amazon. If I find a movie I am interested in I check the reviews on it and if it isn't terrible quality I buy it.
I rarely buy single movies over $20 unless its something I really want or its a Criterion Collection BD. Fortunately for me I have a wide range of taste in everything so I can blind buy with peace of mind. Just broke the 100 mark, looking forward to 200. ![]() |

I only buy blu-ray movies I will watch MULTIPLE times. I have a collection of DVD's that I only watched once and it is a waste. It's better to netflix or rent than buy if the movie is not worth watching multiple times.
Because this is blu-ray, I also only buy GREAT picture quality. I want at least a 4.5/5 rating on picture quality. Otherwise, what is the point of buying in high definition? If a movie meets those two criteria, I will buy. Otherwise I netflix or pass. |

I only purchase Blus if I know I'll be re-watching them over time. I usually collect action blockbusters and comedies. This year alone, IM2, Hot Tub Time Machine, Kick-Ass, Get Him to the Greek, TS3, Knight and Day, The Losers, A-Team, PoP and Percy Jackson are on my to-buy list. These movies are light-hearted escapist entertainment and I know I'll be re-watching these movies on a rainy day or maybe a Sunday afternoon when I have nothing better to do.
I might love Green Zone and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, but I can't see myself watching them again anytime soon. |

I'm really into the Disney collecting, but I do have quite a few other Blu-rays as well.. Aside from Disney films, when picking out whether to buy a movie on Blu or not, I really decide if its a movie I really love. If so, then I pay the extra and get it on Blu-ray.. If I simply just enjoy it, then I'll stick with the less expensive DVD.
And I really think that slipcovers look nice, so thats always a bonus. ![]() |

Most of the time, I buy what I like or whats on my wishlist if it's a good price. And then sometimes I'll just see something for a good price and pick it up. No real thought to it. And then anything I don't watch anymore or get bored of I sell and buy something new. Easy enough
