Carefully

If the "substance" isn't sticky or caked on, I would suggest using a soft dry tissue without any liquid. Then gently wipe from the center of the disc outwards. If that doesn't work then one of the dvd cleaner type products might be your best bet.

Good luck.

Gently use dish soap and water to remove any goo. Be careful to not scratch the surface, usually just a drop of soap and my fingers under running water works. If you have minor scratches, use a soft (and clean) t-shirt to repeatedly wipe from the center outwards in a radial fashion like the spokes of a wheel. Use a small amount of pressure. Turn the disc slightly for each wipe and going around the disc 2 or 3 times like this will usually get any CD or DVD to read.

I can't comment on trying this with a blu-ray because all mine are in mint condition

i use a white t shirt, and based on my rental experience the clear coat protection is AMAZING!. I have seen some crazy stuff just wipe easily off a blu with very little pressure.

I've had success using dish soap with DVDs. However, I've rarely gotten a Blu-ray disc to work properly once it has started skipping. Fortunately, these have all come from Netflix, and I merely requested a replacement if I couldn't get it to work.

If you are referring to a cleaning cloth, me too. I like using it for almost any electronic appliance.

Yup, did the same thing a couple of times, One of them it was a real mess (we had just finished eating ribs or something like that and my 3 year old nephew came in the kitchen with the movie he wanted me to put in, there was sauce laced fingerprints all over the surface)
