I just bought the 40gb PS3 with the Spiderman pack in, and the clerks in the electronics section asked me teasingly if I had purchased the extended warranty with it. Is seems they think that Sony doesnt even make the 40gb, they have a 3rd party make it.
Is this a good system? Should I take it back and get another version? So far I love my PS3 but I dont want a lemon. Last edited by redtornado; 11-09-2007 at 02:48 AM. |

There is nothing wrong with the 40 GB PS3, I don't know how, for a system that is almost identical to its bigger brothers on the inside can have sooooo many problems that the others don't have... |

They were joking with you because the PS3 has like a .2% falure rating. It is a very reliable system and has been since the initial launch with the 60 gig system.
The service warrenty is more for the X-bot 360... like a 40% failure rating on that joke of a system... Don't worry, you chose well grasshopper! ![]() |

Depending on the store I think it can be worth the money.
I bought a 60GB launch system last Nov from WalMart. It was of course $600 and for $60 I could extend the warranty from 1 to 3 years. (the same warranty was only $30 on the 20GB version because it was under $500.) So,.. my warranty would end in a few days but instead I've still got 2 years. I use the heck out of my PS3 every day. I netflix like crazy (though I always wipe off those discs before using them in my PS3) and I have 45 Blu Rays and hundreds of DVD's and I play Ps2 games and PS3 demos and all kinds of stuff. Basically I think it's worth $30 for the comming year and $30 for the year after that to know that if anything happens WalMart will just give me a new one. That said,.. it's performed flawlessly thus far and I think I'll never use the warranty. -Brian |

Stores will say just about anything to get you to buy extended warranties. They make incredible amounts of money off of them.
Ive noticed that they're getting out of hand. They offer extended warranties for things like Guitar Hero now!!! And in Futureshop they have "Gold Plan" warranties with laptops: 3 years, and a bunch of overpriced accessories for about %50 of the cost of the laptop!!! My Gf bought one and of course I told the clerk we didnt want it but he was extremely pushy to the point of giving me a dirty look, but we didnt cave. |

They are just saying that because there is no other way to explain the low price. They are mad about buying an xbox.
I bought a 3yr extended warranty, I think it's worth it. At least for peace of mind. |

I agree with the other posts, they're just trying to sell you the extended warranty. I bought my 60gb PS3 at Best Buy, and the guy tried to sell me a 2 yr. warranty for I think $150 after making a pitch that it's a very high end system in a compact box and that it would only last 2 years. So I handed the box back to him and told him nevermind because I don't even want to deal with having to return a game system, even under warranty after 2 years. He pretty much stumbled over his words at that point and said "oh you'll be fine, it's more for just in case." If I didn't have my 2 giddy sons with me and the PS3 was a "partial" b-day present for my oldest, I'd have walked out and bought it elsewhere.
On the other hand, I think ext. warranties are good if they're reasonably priced, or if you're buying an XB 360 ![]() |

There was some rumors flying around about a 40% failure rate on the 40gb systems. Everything that I have read has said this is totally and completely false. Here is one such ashort article that says exactly that:
http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/2119.html You should not experience any problems. |

that's what I'm afraid of you lost a bit of functionality of the PS3 the 80 GB uses software emulation while the 60 GB version is HW emulation.
