Just received it. Best quality picture I've ever seen from Close Encounters. Sound is very good, if you take into consideration it's age.

My only real complaint is the ridiculously high price for a 'catalog' title. The package kinda sucks, too... If it sells well, I fear we'll get more $49.95 MSRP (~$34 discounted) titles. Who do they think they are? Fox? If you compare the forthcoming Blade Runner 5-disc set, that release is a total steal at $39.99 MSRP (~$28 discounted)!

It is an ultimate edition with THREE versions of the movie.

It's not really fair to compare it to a run-of-the-mill catalog release. It's very special.

Damn, I'm getting itchy for it.

A definite pick up for me as well....can't wait

OT, I seem to be out of the loop, again. There are three versions? I did not know that. Any major differences among the three?

Well, the much larger 5-disc Blade Runner release is far from a "run-of-the-mill catalog release."! How about Cars, also a catalog title?

The differences are not extreme. See the Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Close_E...the_Third_Kind

Damn you blu-ray. I need to stop spending money, but they keep putting out movies I wanna get. And Amazon is selling this for pretty cheap (all things considered).

Saw this when I was 14 or 15. Blew me away. And for me it was Spielberg's best early film (better than Jaws).

jaymzbo: The first version is the original theatrical release, which was rushed by the studio and Spielberg wasn't happy about that. Then they let him film pickups (several years later!) and re-cut it, though (so I hear) they made him tack on the crappy interior of the alien spacecraft--he still wasn't happy. Finally! He created the director's cut, which (as of right now, anyway) is Spielberg's definitive version (and he removed the alien interior scene).

That's exactly write. He goes into the whole story of the three versions in the new interview... which is in HD of course He also confirms there will be no forth version of the film.

One difference that I miss:

There's a scene in the first version that got cut from the second version and was never put back into the third *definitive* version was when Roy arrives at work and the boss asks for a volunteer to head out and find what the problem is with this massive power outage. Roy volunteers but soon gets sidetracked by the UFOs. Later, of course, comes the call at home that informs him that he's been fired. Without that setup scene at the electrical plant, I always thought the firing seemed out of left field.

I sent you a PM explaining this, since I don't want to spoil the film for anyone.

Ok, I still haven't seen reliable confirmation about the audio tracks.

Are the DTHD and DTS-HD tracks 24 or 20 bit?

I know they are upsampled from 16 bits

Both are 24-bit upsampled from 16-bit in the US.

I believe in Europe one may have been 20-bit... you'll have to check the Insider's Thread since that is where paidgeek was answering questions regarding the audio.

I always recommend renting a title first if you aren't acquainted. It would be pretty much one of the safer bets for outright buy but the price may sway some.

Default PQ difference between versions?

Has anybody watched the 1977 version? Do the additional reinstated scenes have worse PQ than the rest?

I wonder why all the hate for showing the interior of the ship, I like that version the best.....nothing cheesy about it. I wish Spielberg made a follow up movie with Neary coming back but then they have to explain the aging since none of the abducstees aged.
