Man sues debt collector and is awarded..

Advanced Call Center Technologies, usually in the business of collecting money for its clients, now finds itself $1.5 million in debt to Allen Jones. A Dallas County court awarded him the hefty judgment after a jury found the agency barraged Jones with harassing and racially charged phone calls.

ACT debt collectors confessed to logging eight expletive-filled calls to Jones, of Lewisville, Texas, in August 2007, many peppered with the "n-word." Jones, 26, saved the vulgar voice mails as evidence.

These debt collectors keep calling here at work for a girl who hasnt worked here in years, and they get pretty nasty when i tell them i have no idea where she is. stupid.

Exactly.

I started doing it last year after a dispute with an old phone bill went to a collection agency. I gladly took the hit to my credit rather than pay out for what basically amounted to theft on their part. Anyway the phone jockey told me he would be by shortly to "get his f****** money or else." I told him to bring a friend and some lunch, because I was planning on making a day of it.

As an FYI, you don't even need to record the call. Just tell them you are and they will usually hang up or be very cordial.

I had a collection co. calling me for a friend who used me as a reference.

They’d call and ask for his new cell #.....i told them I wouldn’t give them his # b/c I knew what they would do w/it.

I played receptionist for about 6 months before I told them to stop calling me and figure out how to get ahold of him themselves.

I remember something similar to this..
I'm not sure if any of you guys are familiar with the radio station FunkyMonkey, buy they have this dj who has a segment called Idiot of the day.

There was this debt collector who was harrassing this guy to the point that the person was stressing and having his health affected.
One day he gets a heart attack and has to be airlifted to a hospital, the next day the debt collector calls again and leaves a voicemail, which they played over the radio, and it goes--
"hey mr X(I forgot his name), stop overacting and get that hellicopter to airlift the money you owe over to our office"

so the wife filed a law suit against the collector..hope they won as well

That brings up an interesting point. Isn't it illegal to record a phone call without informing the other perosn they are being recorded? It may not be, but for some reason I am thinking it is. I'm sure the collector would not have spoken that way had he known he was being recorded. If he was recorded without his knowledge, it would seem like, in our legal system, the recordings couldn't have been used against him.

I believe the recordings in question here were voice mail messages left by the collection agency.

Depends on the state. In Florida, it is a crime punishable as a third degree felony or a first degree misdemeanor (depending on the circumstances), unless, among other exceptions, you receive consent.
