Default The Official "Durham County" Discussion Thread

Season 3 of this brilliant, dark and disturbing Canadian Murder Mystery is starting up again this summer!

Season one was such a delight and a surprise in that it was such an amazing show. Wish it aired here in the states, cause then I wouldn't have to rely on The Internets to see it.

Season two was even more f*cked up and disturbing than season one, if that's possible. Michelle Forbes (Maryanne on True Blood Season 2) played a seriously off the charts demented psychiatrist in this that, along with her turn in True Blood which aired simultaneously with Durham County) puts her at the top of the list if you want someone to play a disturbed and seriously dangerous female character.

SEASON 1 TRAILER: *may have some adult language*

SEASON 2 TRAILER: *may have some adult language*

Synopsis of Season 3

Quote:
"In the 3rd season we're looking at the kind of violence that's sanctioned by the community. Our antagonist is a former soldier and the action takes place in a Durham that's imagined as a war zone," says Writer/Executive Producer/Co-Creator Laurie Finstad Knizhnik (Cold Squad, Bliss).

"Michael Nardone, who plays Mike's nemesis, Ivan, in season 3, has an incredible authenticity to him that stems from his life growing up battling gangs in the tough town of Fife, Scotland. He brings both a fierceness and compassion to a very deeply disturbed character. The chemistry between him and Hugh is spellbinding to watch," says Director/Executive Producer/Co-Creator Adrienne Mitchell (Durham County, Bliss).

"This season the Sweeney's are all entering a new and exciting phase in their lives," says Executive Producer/Co-Creator Janis Lundman (Bliss, Drop the Beat). "But everything begins to spiral out of control and their lives will be turned upside down. It's going to be a terrifying but wonderful ride."

I missed the first season when it aired here. So I might have to blind buy the first season. Looks really good and haven't heard a bad thing about it yet.

There's very little about the show in the press. I found this from Feb. 1st in Australia which had begun airing the show.

***MINOR SPOILERS FOR SEASON 1***

Quote:
This fiercely murderous and superbly spooky thriller — six episodes for starters, each one a gem — opens with a mind game of short sequences, all tantalisingly short on detail. There are immediate rewards, for it takes only a couple of shakes for viewers to be shocked to their socks. What is going on here? Something way beyond nasty - and whose eyes are those peering through the bushes?

The opening credits offer due warning — the letter "a" in Durham County is replaced by a red triangle indicating danger ahead. This is Canadian television of a high order — a genuine local product. None of that unconvincing obsession for filming Hollywood stories on the cheaper streets of Vancouver.

Welcome to Durham County, Ontario, where the location crews struck gold choosing their ground. Alongside a neat-looking town, the plot required a vast area criss-crossed by a network of hideous power lines and pylons. This depressing view confronts Detective Mike Sweeney (Hugh Dillon, pictured) and his wife Audrey (Australian actress Helene Joy) when they move into the police house reserved for them and their family.

[Show spoiler]We sense Sweeney to be a good-guy cop — albeit laden with secrets — who applied for a transfer after his partner was shot dead beside him in the big city. He considers Durham County will offer a quieter life and be beneficial to Audrey, slowly recovering after breast cancer surgery. Her determination to adapt to the necessary prosthetics brings her into conflict with Sadie, her surly elder daughter (Laurence Leboeuf). This is a divisive family and the recuperative move anticipated is shattered on Sweeney's first day at work, plus the discovery that Ray, an old school rival (Justin Louis), lives opposite.

Murders aside — and they are brutal — this series is fearless with difficult subjects, including the lascivious build-up to a planned gang rape. Finely judged, compelling viewing.

Wait a minute...........that's the guy from Flash Point isn't it? And how many more tv shows is Michelle Forbes going to do, BSG and True Blood now this? I may just have to check out this show after all. She was especially ruthless and brutal on BSG as well. So she is most definitely the perfect bad b!tch.

Yep, that's Hugh Dillon who is in Flashpoint. And Forbes role on True Blood was airing at the same time as Durham County last year. lol.

You need to see Season 1 first though, because even though she's not in Season 1, it has a lot of carry over stuff involving the bad guy in the show "Ray Prager" and Dillon's daughter.

I'm gonna buy both seasons on the 1st, cause I gave my season 1 to a buddy.

EDIT: watch the season 2 trailer (in the 1st post) and get a glimpse of just how effed up Forbes is...lol

You know, Wylde, this show is right up your alley. While it doesn't have the action of a "Sons of Anarchy" it's extremely dark and quite possibly the most disturbing television series I've ever seen.

Brilliant suspense/thriller show. When it came to the USA via the ION network, the reviews were all like a combination of "what the eff?" and "this genuinely DISTURBED me"

And that was only the 1st season. The 2nd season was even MORE effed up and disturbing.

Since there's not a lot of info hardly at all on Season 3 (although it's already completed filming and should start airing this summer) I figured I'd post up a review piece for Season 2.

Good piece here, and should entice some readers of this thread to blindbuy the DVDS of Season 1 and Season 2.

***SPOILERS FOR BOTH SEASONS***

Quote:
The Canadian crime series Durham County is back for a second season, debuting tonight (Monday, July 13 at 9 p.m. ET on The Movie Network, following a repeat of the Season One finale). And it's just as dark as the first, nightmare-inducing first season, although from a different perspective.

It's good, almost as good as the first season, although I offer than praise with the same trepidation as I did when I reviewed the DVD. Season One, about
[Show spoiler]a wacko named Ray Prager who happens upon two girls in the forest dying from a serial killer's attacks and proves he is no human
, was too horrifying for me to sit through on the first go 'round. It took months of listening to fans of the series and series star Hugh Dillon for me to catch up, when the DVD came out. It was still horrifying, but I plowed through all six episodes. Like swallowing all the good but horrible tasting medicine in one go.

It was a fantastic, stylish, suspenseful piece of work: Cop Mike Sweeney (Dillon) knows his neighbour Prager (Justin Louis) is responsible for the deaths of the two girls and,
[Show spoiler] although it takes him all six episodes, he finally gets his man. The cost? Prager's final act before being arrested by Sweeney is to kidnap and attempt to assault and/or kill Sweeney's daughter Sadie (Laurence Leboeuf). Sweeney arrives in time. Or at least before Sadie suffers any physical wounds.

Season One also left me wanting to take a shower or to walk among children and puppies playing in a sunny meadow. Very dark. Very creepy. Does the high quality of the work mitigate the images this dark business leaves in your head? Very personal call. If you can't easily shake this kind of stuff from your head, don't watch. But if you can take it, watch this series. And watch it from the beginning.

Season 2 finds the Sweeney family in tatters. Mike has been promoted but, as his colleagues point out, he's still clearly suffering from post-traumatic stress due to
[Show spoiler]having witnessed Prager attempt to kill his daughter.
Sadie is even more brittle. She wants dad to come home. Family therapy is ongoing.

And Prager (now played by Romano Orzari who replaces Louis)? He
[Show spoiler]has survived a suicide-by-fire attempt (the scars are real, Orzari having survived a car crash) and is ready for trial. Which means Sadie will have to testify as she is the sole witness and other evidence is thin.

Twisting the suspense a little more tightly is the arrival of a new damaged soul in the community of Durham County. Pen Verrity (Michelle Forbes of True Blood, In Treatment, Homicide: Life on the Street) has a dead daughter, a trembly young son, a raging estranged husband and a backyard pool that never gets used anymore. She also has a therapist's degree, which is what allows her path to intersect with Sweeney's.

That puts all the pieces on the board. I won't spill any beans but it wouldn't matter if I revealed every single plot turn. As with any good story -- and this is a good one -- it's all in the telling.

The look of the series is still sinister: the power lines, the half-finished housing development, Sweeney's shell of a new temporary home, even the name of the baseball league that Sadie plays in -- the "Emergency League". And even when there is light, as in the Verrity's ritzy home, it's sterile and cold.

As far as performances go, Dillon is masterful as the detective father. As Sadie, Leboeuf is spectacular. And her scene with Prager's son, her former boyfriend (played by Greyston Holt of Smallville) was lovely. Forbes is icy and scary, somethings that she's also working well on True Blood as the devil/demon who hosts bizarre parties and harbours a strange pig.

But the plot in Season 2 is a wee bit more ragged than in the first in a couple of key respects. The relationship between Sweeney and Verrity does not feel earned. And Sweeney's obsession with one aspect of the encounter between Sadie and Prager, while understandable in a father, is never grounded in the investigation story. However, in the thick nest of wierdness that surrounds these two points, these false notes quickly dissipate.

I could only endure two episodes of preview. I'm fortifying myself for the rest. I zipped through a couple of later episodes and saw some garish, horrifying stuff. You are warned. But this series has proved worth the effort it takes to watch it. If you're up to it.

Let me know your take on disturbing but well-done television.

Interview with Hugh Dillon last year when Durham County debuted in America (two years after it premiered in Canada)

*** just the stuff on Durham County/Flashpoint. And LOTS of cursing. lol ***

Quote:
Bullz-Eye: Hello, Hugh!

Hugh Dillon: Hey, man, how are you?

BE: I’m very good. So I have to think that it’s got to be a little surreal for you to be sitting here, promoting the US premiere of “Durham County” two years after the series made its debut on Canadian television.

HD: It is and it isn’t, y’know? It’s like…well, actually, it isn’t, really. It’s part of my life, you know?

BE: So how did you first come on board to the series? The idea of a show based around a cop chasing a serial killer might not be all that unique, but “Durham County” certainly feels unique.

HD: You know, for me, it was just a question of…I got these scripts, and I couldn’t believe just how well-written they were and how compelling they were. And, quite frankly, I found it pretty addictive. I remember picking up the first one when I was at a cottage, and I thought, “Ah, I’ll just start reading this, I’ll get to it.” And I read the first one, and it was like reading a ****ing Stephen King novel. I read all six scripts, and I thought, “This is ****ing awesome.” (Laughs) And then I kept flipping back to the cover, because I thought, “****, this is a woman that wrote this? This is pretty brutal!” And then I met the lady…well, the three producers, really (Janis Lundman, Adrienne Mitchell, and Laurie Finstad Knizhnik), and they’re incredibly intelligent , they’ve got integrity, and…well, you know, they’re just very smart women. It was like meeting the witches of Eastwick. (Laughs) I realized, “****, I’ve just got to be honest around them, or I’m gonna **** this up.” And they were great! And then we got to be friends, and I passed the audition, and the network said I was in, then we cast the rest of the shit, and the rest is history. And Adrienne, the director / producer, is, like, a…she’s got a great vision, she’s got a great aesthetic, and they’re people who really don’t compromise, you know? And that’s why I think this show is so successful: because they really know what they want.

BE: Were you surprised when you found that it was finally going to make it across the border?

HD: Surprised…? (Considers the question)

BE: I guess you’d had some experience with that kind of thing, though, with “Flashpoint” turning up on CBS.

HD: Yeah, I mean, so I wasn’t surprised, but…you know what it is? When you’ve seen somebody else work so very hard, and you know that the work is good, you’re just happy for them and proud of them. So I’m just excited that we’re getting this shot, because I love this show. I don’t know how many you’ve seen…

BE: Just the first two.

HD: Oh, okay, well, it really goes someplace. Hopefully they can get you the rest, because it continues on, these first twelve episodes, into… (Hesitates) It’s like…do you remember all of the independent films in the ‘90s? That’s what it reminds me of. And we’ve got Michelle Forbes who comes along, and it just unfolds beautifully. It’s really something. There’s something hypnotic about it that I love.

BE: It’s funny that you say that, because I watched those first two episodes with my wife, and after the first one, she said, “Well, it’s good, but it’s a little slow.” But after the second one, she said, “Was that one shorter? Because it just flew past!”

HD: Yeah, once you get into it, it’s addictive. And it’s so haunting that…like I said, there’s something hypnotic about it, because if you just sit down and watch, the time just flies by. You’re in, and you’re a fan. There’s just something about the way they’ve captured this hyper piece of the human condition. It’s unique.

BE: It very much reminds me of a David Lynch production.

HD: Yeah!

BE: Are there any other points of comparison that you’d offer?

HD: Someone else said, “It’s like ‘Twin Peaks’ meets ‘The Sopranos.’” And I thought, “You know, I can live with that.”

BE: So how quickly did the family relationship develop between you and Helene Joy, Laurence Leboeuf, and Cicely Austin?

HD: I think…you know, so much of it comes down to the great producers, these women again, because the casting was just right on the money. I mean, the funny thing is, with us, we shoot that in Montreal, and so, for me, there’s a disconnect right out of the gate, because I don’t speak French. So all of a sudden, we’re in Montreal, we shoot in the fall, and everything’s kind of dying. The days are getting shorter. And for me, when I walked in, I met Laurence, who plays my daughter, and we had that natural chemistry. We just hit off. We had a lot in common. Even in real life, I’m a little protective with her. So there were a lot of things in real life that helped when you see the show. It translates, the whole “art imitates life” thing, or whatever.

BE: I’m glad you responded that way, because I’d been thinking about retiring that question from my repertoire. Everybody generally tends to give me a variation on, “When it’s on the page, it’s on the stage.”

HD: Yeah, and it’s that, too. (Laughs)

BE: You made a comment about the changes in the landscape as a result of shooting in the fall. I’ve interviewed some folks from the cast of “Harper’s Island,” and many of them spoke of how, while shooting in Vancouver, it got progressively colder and darker as they filmed the series, but it worked in the show’s favor. Do you think it helped “Durham County” as well?

HD: I think it did. And does, because now we’re going into Season 3. I start shooting that next month. And, like I said, the first two seasons worked like a charm. When Michelle Forbes came on board last year, it was just fun to watch the whole progression with her, because she showed up, and she’s amazing in the show. She just got it, you know? She got it. She went, “Wow, this is weird.”

BE: And she should know weird, given her “True Blood” stuff.

HD: Yeah, I know! (Laughs) She said, “I’m on these dark shows, and this is ****ing darker than any of them!”

BE: But, of course, she made it through “Kalifornia,” too.

HD: Yeah, and that’s what I first knew her from.

BE: I mentioned earlier about “Flashpoint” getting its US screening through CBS, but to talk of surprises again, did you expect it to take off here the way it did?

HD: You know, from my personal point of view, I’m not surprised, because it comes back to the writers again. I read that pilot, and I thought, “These people really know what they’re doing.” And it’s because Mark Ellis and Stephanie Morganstern, who wrote it, talked to the real guys. And they got us, the actors, hooked up with the real guys. So I wasn’t surprised. I just thought they had such integrity, and they were such decent people, that they just did their due diligence, so to speak, and they covered it so beautifully in terms of…I mean, it’s an action show, but it’s got such an emotional core, and they were able to hit that, so much so that the real SWAT guys are very proud of the show. So I just had a good feeling about it, so I guess it wasn’t that much of a surprise.

BE: When “Flashpoint” premiered here in the States, I guess the show’s matinee name was Enrico Colantoni, because of his work on “Just Shoot Me” and “Veronica Mars.”

HD: Of course.

BE: I didn’t realize at first that you were the star of “Hard Core Logo.” In fact, for a minute, when I saw the name of the film, I was, like, “Wait, that sounds familiar, I think I’ve seen that.” But almost as quickly, it was followed by a horrifed, “Omigod, the ending…!” It all came back in a rush.

HD: Too funny. But that’s good! And, yeah, that was really a huge moment for us when (Quentin) Tarantino picked that up and released the movie.

BE: It’s really phenomenal. I mean, I’m a fan of…well, technically, it’s a mockumentary, but it’s certainly not a comedy in the traditional sense. Not the ending, that’s for sure.

HD: Yeah, that movie was really what got me into the whole acting thing, ‘cause I just got to work with such a great director and a great cast. And, y’know, he allowed me to do a lot of stuff. I wrote the ending to that movie. So that movie was really…I just thought, “You know, I ****ing like acting!” (Laughs)

I didn't see this listed on my DVR search and I do get ION. I guess I won't be able to watch this just yet. I do love the effed up and disturbed that's where I dwell, I just figured this was a regular procedural show. Canadian shows are always amusing to me though, makes me think of all the times the gang ripped on Robin on HIMYM for being Canadian. It's just so much fun. I'll probably eventually find a way to watch, and I'll let you know what I think when I do.

Season 2 is released on July 27th, and here's a bigger picture (not better image quality sadly) and a synopsis:
Quote:
Love Hurts. More Betrayal and terrifying secrets are unleashed as Durham County returns for another electrifying season. In Season Two, newly promoted homicide detective Mike Sweeney (Hugh Dillon) struggles to keep his family together as they try to come to terms with the anguish left behind by a serial killer. He also develops an intense bond with a brilliant but deeply troubled forensic psychiatrist named Pen Verrity, (Michelle Forbes) who works in his department.

I still have not gotten the time to delve into another series just yet. I literally just started watching the final season of The Tudors which has been storing on my DVR since early April, lol. I had 10 episodes sitting there the past several months without watching one. I forgot how much I enjoyed that show. I might get around to watching this sometime next month. But if not by than, it won't be until winter hiatus when all my other shows take 6 weeks off lol.
