Will you be painting or staining?
Are you looking for slick/sleek or "traditional"?
What building experience do you have? Tools?
We need to know more about who and what we're dealing with here.

I converted an old dresser into my TV stand with basic hand tools and knowledge. If I'd had an actual work shop, I could have done better, maybe.

Do you have a price range for materials?
Might that price range cover some of the pre-made products? There are tons!!

Give us some more, we'll give you more back....thanks

Some reason your picture didn't load for me the first time. Check out this post....couple guys with a simple, in-expensive set-up with IKEA products that look like what you've drawn out.

If you have the tools and some amount of skill, you can make just about anything out of 3/4" oak/birch plywood. To finish the edges, you can attatch solid strips, decorative edging or simply buy iron-on wood edging that matches your plywood. Both shelf units and the entertainment center in my HT were built that way (by me).

Yeah, it's like thy're shipping from Sweden!! I don't understand why they can't ship from the US?

You're right though, you could build that. If you're going to paint it, or otherwise cover it, I'd recommend MDF.

With proper support, sure. 90% of store bought furniture is MDF. Having said that, plywood is just as easy to work with and gives a nice surface to stain.

Why so short? You want the screen closer to eye-level so you don't look down. May I suggest 30 inches instead? You could add a shelf for the center speaker.

Is driving to the Schaumburg, IL Ikea an option? It's only 2 hrs away.

Having worked with both, get the plywood. It's easy to work with but the main reason is weight. MDF is heavy. Very heavy. Especially the 3/4" stuff. Plywood is worth the extra $ for it being lighter and having a better finish to stain.
