Exclamation PSP/PS3 "Remote On" Issues

I had a few issues with the PS3/PSP remote on system. I'm just posting this as information to those who may have similar problems.

Since PS3 was updated to 2.00 (PSP 3.72) the PS3 now has a wake-on-lan/ wake-on-wan feature added to the remote play function.

Switching on the "Remote On" option on causes the PS3 to actually stay on when you turn it off. If you put your ear next to the console (careful it gets hot) you can hear the hard drive still spinning. Turn "Remote On" off and the console off and the console will remain silent. (Just thought I'd mention this for those who have large electricity bills!)

Of course if you switch the console off with the switch on the back of the console (or at the wall) obviously the console will remain off.

My PS3 has recently had a fault shutting down, every 5 or 6 time it would seem. When turning the power off, it takes a little longer than normal and then beeps 3 times before powering down. If the PS3 does this when it shuts down, the REMOTE ON will not work from the PSP unless you turn the PS3 console on manually and shut it down properly. How annoying.

I've no idea what is causing my PS3 to beep 3 times shutting down, and I'm not really bothered as aside from the Remote On problem (which I was only playing around with because its new) it does not cause me any operational problems.

I'm just posting this as information for anyone having problems with "Remote On". But while I'm at it can anyone tell me what the three beeps shutting down means?

I have the same problem as mentioned above. Also, how do you make the PS3 turn on via PSP? Can't seem to get it working.

PSP needs to be updated to 3.72 (for remote on)
PS3 needs to be updated to 2.00 (for remote on)

Connect your PSP to PS3 via USB cable (Same one as the PS3 controller)
On PSP set to 'USB Connection' mode under 'settings'
On PS3 go to 'remote play' under 'settings' and register a device
It should find your PSP and save its name and mac address

Unplug and restart both consoles (not required but good practice)

On PS3 goto the 'network' tab and select remote play.
Go to PSP 'network' tab and select remote play (it should list your PS3 name)
Select connect via private network (if within range PS3)
Select connect via internet if anywhere else (you will need to sign in on PSP using your PSN account if you use this method).

After a few seconds you should see your PS3 screen on your PSP.

REMOTE ON
Make sure your main PS3 user is set to AUTO LOG-IN
Under the 'remote play' settings on the PS3 select 'remote on' and allow it to connect via internet.

Shut your PS3 down, you may note that if you have a PS3 stand with USB powered LEDs the lights will stay on, and, if you listen carefully, the hard drive is still running.
On your PSP go to network and select 'remote play' or 'connect to [PS3 name]' and your PS3 should beep and spring into life.

On the PSP press 'home' to bring up various options (connection speed and such) then select 'switch off console' and magically the PS3 will turn off.

I've written all this blind, some menu names may vary.

All this assumes you haven't encountered any problems shutting down the PS3 in which case 'remote on' does not seem to work. Those with a USB lit PS3 stand will notice the lights remaining on when the console is powered down and remote on is enabled.

All this assumes you do not turn the PS3 off with the switch on the rear.

Hope this helps!

this might be off-topic, but I am a bit worried that my ps3's wireless light is always on if my ps3 is off (with setting of remote play on). will this be dangerous? I mean PSP generates heat when the wireless is on (not sure for ps3).

I have my remote on active on my system and it does not seem to run warm or anthing when it is in stand by mode. You should also remember that anytime you put the system into stand by it will be consuming power, although it is very very low amounts. I do have my WiiConnect24 on my Wii and I can say that system is warm to the touch. This is not the case with my PS3.

I am not sure how much power having this feature on consumes, but i do remember that when Folding@Home came out, there was an article I read that said on average, the PS3 would add about $10-12 to your monthly bill if you ran it 24-7 for one month. The article was for the US and based off of average electricity cost in the month of Dec '06.
