Default Projector Shelf Ideas

I am in the process of planning out building a projector shelf for my Pioneer FPJ1 (JVC RS2 Clone). Now, at present my current setup is inadequate due to my sub being able to shake it. Causing a lot of blur during bass shaking scenes.

So I was hoping you could all help and give some ideas, pictures or designs.

Thanks.

Mine is on top of a rather large Ikea bookshelf... no problems with my svs nsd12 sitting next to it

If you can't do this, apply the same idea to an "On the wall" application

Yes ... but I like the shelf idea better. I think it looks better and is more out of sight at the back of the room. May not be as bright, but the noise is much lower and contrast is amazing. Also a lot less vertical shift.

Actually, I am at almost 800 hrs on the bulb and my wife is still complaining its too bright at almost 19 ft away. Advantage of a cave I guess.

That looks nice. I was thinking of a hush box, but was concerned about air flow. If my projector has all its ventilation in the front, intake and exhaust should I be ok with the sides enclosed?

Yeah, you could also make openings and frame them in on the sides and bottom with speaker-grill-clothe, and even add a fan if needed. I'm definitely going with some sort of hush box next time, and may even use a kitchen cabinet or other on-the-wall cabinet and modify it, if I can find one that looks nice......

EDIT:

I bet that red glowing thing inside the box is a fan, or reflection off of the fan from a power light on the projector.

Thats a really great idea. Never thought of looking for a on-the-wall cabinet and modifing it. That may make life easier. But the real challenge would be finding one that will work and looks nice. Seen anything so far?

Haven't started looking really...... but even a "cheaper" storage cabinet etc. made for 'on-wall' for garages etc would work with a nice coat of paint etc..... My basic idea (just started thinking about it really) was to find a box structure of some sort that was already made, and anchoring it to the wall (which would be easy since it'd obviously span at least two of the 2x4's in the wall)

Perhaps I'll come across some sort of "art" element that can be modified too......

I might get something like this....... open the door for viewing (and afterwards for cooling of course) add a fan into it, and then place my center-rear (for 6.1) speaker above it.......

I have to look into more details, because I may need to ceiling mount it in my next theater room.... I haven't figured out all of the measurements yet, or what side of the room the screen will be on.

Never hurts to start looking early. But, isn't that shelf kinda short, in terms of depth?

Half the trouble I am having is that my projector is 16 1/2" deep, which makes it a beast when it comes to finding an on the wall shelf, as most are only 12" deep. I think I am going to have to go custom on this one.

My idea when I eventually get my projector is to do something like this across my back wall. I would hang the microwave cabinet upside down so the opening would be on top and the doors would be on bottom. Most microwave cabinets are 15" deep, but some companies do make an 18" also.

a1.JPG

EDIT: The depths should be 21" and 18". Some companies do make a 15" cabinet with a shelf that extends out 6" or so to accommodate the microwave. The shelf is builder installed, so with a little(very little) modification it could be made to work. if the shelf is even needed. Aren't most projectors under 14" deep(front to back)?

Tilallr1, do you think it's the shelf that is vibrating or the wall. I ask that because I had the same problem with my ceiling mount vibrating but it was the ceiling that was vibrating. I added a 1/8" piece of foam between the ceiling and mount and loosened the bolts at the ceiling and that did the trick. I'm wondering if there is a way to bring your current shelf away from the wall somehow with foam or something to absorb the vibration.

Very good point! When I mounted my ceiling mount (I mounted it inside a wall, to the 2x4 that was the top horizontal piece the wall was framed up with....sorry don't know my carpentry terms ) I drove the lag-bolts used to secure it through an old mouse-pad so vibrations wouldn't travel through the wall/ceiling and down the projector's mount/arm........ so even if you do a cabinet on the wall or a hush-box on the ceiling, I'd recommend putting a layer of dense rubber or something between it and the wall/ceiling....

It's probably both, but I am almost certain its mostly due to the mount I am using. It doesn't lock, and swings. So during heavy bass it shakes a bit. Which obviously causes the image to blur. I cannot fix this unfortunately. I did try putting some carpet under pad under the projector which helped a lot, but didn't eliminate the problem unfortunately. So I am stuck with replacing the mount. I thought the swinging feature would be helpful, but didn't realize it didn't lock.

Whichever solution I go with, I think the permanent fix will involve 2 or more studs as well as no movement with the unit. This thing needs to be solid.

I use a ceiling mount but the idea of a shelf is tempting.

I can't remember why I decided the pj had to be upside down. (There must have been a reason.)

Anyway,... With my current mount making adjustments to the projector is impossible and with a shelf such adjustments would be simple. I also like the idea of making it a hush box too. My last projector had a huge hush box. The new projector was so quiet by comparison I threw out the hush box but now I want to lower the noise floor again.

Tilallr1, it still might be worth it to just try something between the mount and wall. That's a nice clean looking mount you have already.
