Default Looking to start some acousitic treatment, need help

So im looking to start some acoustic treatment in my room, i have a pretty basic setup right now but i really think my room will benefit from some work, i have looked at some DIY guides on how to make panels( bass traps) n other stuff, but i really dont know where to start, and where i should put stuff for the best effect, where should bass traps go, where should foam panels go? all help would be greatly appreciated
here are some pics of the my ht and the walls, sorry for the crappy quality only have a camera phone right now, but i think u can see enough
if u have any questions please ask
i am new to acoustical treatment, and i really dont kno much

this is the back wall, i dont have any surrounds hooked up at the moment, and i wont be hooking up any until i buy new ones, other ones were doing more bad then good, but thats besides the point

this is the left wall of my room, its bare right now, as u see the bottom half of the wall is wood panels, i dont kno if this is bad, but thats what u get from living in a old house that hasnt been updated.

tv and front speakers/sub, showing the wall behind it, which is bare right now too

acouple others

to the right of the HT is a open space where my bed is, the right wall is about 15+feet away from the right speaker

so where do i start? whats the best place to put everything?
thank you

ICE

Are we in agreement? Will the "wood" paneling be worse for reflection than the drywall? I'd guess since the paneling is slick and a hard surface, it'll reflect quite a bit....NO??

Yes. I'm noticing a lot more severe reflections in the immediate area of my door, which is solid, flat wood.

I asked about his ceiling because it looks like it's made from commercial tiles. I have those at work and they do a decent job at attenuating reflections.

yes thats what my ceiling is made of, and i thought the wood panels would be a problem

wut will help this problem? will putting big panels and bass traps on the walls help, or will i have to do more that that?

what are some things u will hear in a room that isnt acousticaly good?

I'm sure someone has taken commercial ceiling tiles, wrapped them in felt or fleece or micro-suede then mounted them to a wall....right? They'd be thin....I know many of the sound absorbsion panels out there are sometimes 6-inches thick.

And yes, I'm sure this is all in the "sticky" threads....but they're so big

in my room, on the walls, where would i place, bass traps, acoustic foam,
i just dont know where to start

to start off..
if were to make 4-5, fibreglass panels, 2x3 feet, and put them on the walls, where would be the best spots to put them?

cuz i have been reading up on different ways of making them, and i would like to do so in the next week or so, i plan on adding more stuff down the line. but i am on a bugdet and would like to start with this

i was gona put 1 on the left side of tv behind left speaker, and two on the right side of the tv behind right speaker, cuz there is a longer wall, and then two on the rear wall( i was gona move the last movie rack so it fits)
does this sound like good placement, what would be better
i want to add more when i have more money, to the left wall, because it is a flat open space, or should i start there, and forget about back wall?

i know that corner bass traps are good, will get to that in the future

thanks

Bass traps go in the corners of the room were it can accumulate / hang out !

Take a look at my gallery & it will give you an idea .

Behind the front L/R . On the side walls in a couple areas , Behind the surrounds & in between them & the fronts . On the ceiling in front of the front sound stage 2 feet or so .

On the back wall in 2 spots evenly spaced on the wall .

The paneling on the wall you have can be removed & it will help .

Diffusion can help as well .

The links I posted in post #2 are vary helpful in all of this

im on vacation. trying to spend my birthday without going online, but i guess my spl meter went off to check some stuff on the netbook.

do you know how difficult it is to use these darn things?

im heading to california adventure now, and will attend to this later on.

there are a number of distinguished gentlemen on here, mattym and kareface are two of em, who can probably help as well. you can ask crazyblu and ddgtr about my credibility on this topic if youd like.

what i need is simple.

- room dimensions.
- current room treatments
- dedicated room? 'living area'?
- more pictures (kindly post in gallery section if you dont mind.)
- current setup (5.1, 2 channel, 7.1)

ddgtr, hows the room coming up btw?

lets dance later.

i hate netbooks.

Ice, there a few basic places I would start with panels:

Bass traps in the corners as you know. Floor to ceiling is best if you can.

First order reflections (first spot the sound wave hits the side wall). Have a buddy help you. Take a mirror and move it along the wall until you see your speakers in the mirror. That is going to be your first order reflection. Put a panel there. If you want to go all out you can put a panel at every point you see a speaker in the mirror. Go with what your budget allows. You might want to look at getting a couple on that back wall. You may even look into diffusers.

Another good spot is directly behind the mains.

If you are wanting to build some, click on my theater page and then go to the DIY section. I show some of the steps in building panels. They are 2 inches thick and the bass traps are 4 inches. Some people build them 6 inches thick. If you view the rest of my gallery you will see what they look like in my rooms. Here is a link to ATS Acoustics where I purchased Roxul 60

lol, happy birtday, and thank you for taking time and replying

-the room is about 10x21 feet
-i dont have any room treatments done yet, i just want to get started
-this is my bedroom as well, but i would like it too be more than a HT than a bed room lol, but no other rooms to use, to the right of my tv n speakers is my sleeping area(bed dressers,) n a fireplace
-i can post more pictures if u want, let me kno what exactly you would like too see, the pictures that i post show all the walls surrounding my tv/speakers, except for where my bed is
-my current set up is 3.1( fronts/sub), i have cheap surrounds but they do more harm then good, will be getting surrounds wen have more money

thank you for the reply, yea ive been looking around my area to buy some fiberglass panels or mineral wool, its been hard to find somewhere online that ships to canada
fiberglass or mineral wool? whats better?
those bass traps and panels in your HT look great, i will definitely be using those guide lines to build mine
yea im going to add some diffusers in too, pyramid type foam, thats for diffusion right?

i realy dont understand the mirror effect.. do u look into the mirror straight on? or what kind of angle? and do u do this for the side walls only or all around?
if u can explain this more, that would be great

thank you very much

Sorry, I guess I didn't give that great of directions on using the mirror. While you are sitting in your main listening seat, have your buddy slide the mirror flat along the wall until you see a reflection of the speaker. It is likely that you will be about to see the reflection as you are facing forward. Typically people use this trick for the side walls, but it can work for ceilings too.

As far as diffusion, there are a few different styles. Those pyramids state that they do some diffusion. Here is a link to Real Traps and their style of diffusers. There are lots of different styles. I have found some thread about DIY diffusers too if you decide you want to build your own.

new to all this acoustic treatment stuff

thanks for the links
i would love too see those threads about DIY diffusers too

Typically you would do that for both of the mains, but it looks like the right side of your room is open so there isn't a wall next to your right main. In your case you would probably just do it for the left main.

I would probably start with a 2 bass traps on the left side (front and rear) and hit that first order reflection on the left. Look into something for that back wall. It is going to be a bit more difficult for the right side since it is open. It will come into play, but not nearly as much as that left side.

I will see if I can track down that information I found about DIY diffusers and post it for you.
