Yup there is a good chance that Blu-ray will be in PS3 because of Sony "Unified" Tranformation 60 plan.

Here is an exerpt from Game Informer magazine, with an interview with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's COO David Reeves:

"In other PlayStation 3 news Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun reported that Sony plans to incorporate Blu-Ray DVD technology in the upcoming system. Trportedly Sony vice prisident Kiyoshi Nishitani said that Blu-Ray is the ideal formant for the system."

this was from the June issue of Game Informer Magazine.
(I will also post this on the Xbox2 thread)

The only issue I see with putting BD in PS3 is cost. The PS3 will need to be a reasonable cost to take off - BD is currently most unreasonable - in fact, 3-4 times as unreasonable as the first DVD players which came out at US$1000 or less...

So, does that mean that PS3 is a LONG WAY OFF or does it mean that they expect BD to drop in price really quickly...???

Cheers!

I'd rather wait an extra year, or even two, just to have bluray in the PS3. Noone wants to end up having storage problems because of dvd limitations.

I just realised that one cost saving factor is that PS3 will only need BD-ROM playback, no recording needed. So that could reduce the cost dramatically...??

Cheers!

Yes it will reduce cost but I wish that they can make it a burner too since that would mean that you can save at certain point without a memorycard.

Thing is, Sony isn't going to allow the XBox and N5 a head start on the PS3 just so they can wait for the cost of Blu-Ray technology to come down to a more reasonable level. Especially as it's likely PS2 sales will be on the downward streach of it's product life cycle.

13 firms to devise specifications for playback-only 'Blu-ray Disc'+
, 08.03.04, 3:16 PM ET

TOKYO, Aug 03, 2004 (Kyodo via COMTEX) -- The world's 13 major electronics makers said Tuesday they will draw up by Sept. 30 a set of technological specifications for ultra-large-memory prerecorded "Blu-ray Disc" videodisks whose functions will be limited to playing back contents.

This type of Blu-ray Disc video storage medium will carry such content as movies. The Blu-ray Disc technology combines optical disk and blue-laser technologies.

Another type of Blu-ray Disc that allows users to both record and play back video images has already been put on the market.

The 13 include Sony Corp., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and Dell Inc. of the United States.

These manufacturers plan to start marketing, by the end of fiscal 2005, video software as well as the Blu-ray Disc players whose functions will be limited to playing back prerecorded contents, they said.

In a related move, Sony officials said the company will equip an upcoming version of the PlayStation2 video console with a Blu-ray Disc player, so that purchasers can enjoy both video games and movies of high-image quality.

Sony plans to announce the outline of the next version of PlayStation2 by March 31, 2005, they said.

Sony's Blu-ray Disc provides 23 gigabyte storage memory capacity -- five times that of a DVD.

Compared with CD or DVD systems based on red lasers, Blu-ray machines use blue lasers that have a shorter wavelength and require much less space to store each bit of information.

So Blu-ray is confirmed for Sony's PS3. However it is rumoured that there are going to be two versions of the PS3.
