Default Receiver Audio Question

Tonight I'm setting up my Home Theatre (for models see signature). I'm going to run HDMI 1.3 from the Blu-Ray Player to the Receiver and also run HDMI 1.3 from the receiver to the TV. Since HDMI cables also carry audio, how does the Receiver know whether to output the audio to the connected speakers, or to the TV, or to both??? Is that usually a configuration option in the receiver? Does it always do one or the other?

Thanks!!!

I have the Onkyo 805 and it comes factory set to decode the audio only. If you dig around in the menus, there is a place where you can change the HDMI settings to output the audio to the tv but what would you want to do that for if you have a 705

Perfect!!! I don't want the audio to go to the TV at all. I was a little scared I'd have to turn something off or be stuck muting the TV. I have no experience with HDMI cables yet so I was just looking for a heads up. Thanks!

Settings in the Amp, player, and TV !!
the players tells it to output the audio
the amp selects source for audio
and the TV turns off its internal speakers
I ended up turning down my set when I use my amp
to prevent echo ( I use the amp, my wife uses the tv-- go figure
