Talking FX snags Elijah Wood for new comedy 'Wilfred'

When I read about this show a few weeks back, I thought it had an interestingly screwed up premise, but never in a million years would I have guessed Elijah Wood for the lead. I am a fan of 95% of FX programming so I don't doubt this will interest me as we learn more.

Quote:
Drama-heavy FX is getting serious about comedy. To wit: The cabler has successfully wooed ex-hobbit Elijah Wood to headline its in-the-works U.S. remake of the hit Australian sitcom Wilfred.

The project, which is being adapted by Family Guy vet David Zuckerman, revolves around a guy (Wood), a girl, and a mixed-breed dog named Wilfred, whom Zuckerman describes as “part Labrador retriever and part Russell Crowe on a bender.”

Jason Gann, who co-created and starred in the Aussie version, will once again play the title role (that is, when said title role appears in human form).

This marks Wood’s first major foray into television. The Lord of the Rings vet will next be seen in the fall film The Romantics opposite Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel, and Anna Paquin.

Production on the Wilfred pilot will begin later this summer.

I remember FX had a good Comedy show and they abandoned it after a season. :-(

I don't believe I can name a single show that FX ordered a pilot for that they never picked up. Especially something starring someone as high profile as Elijah Wood. This is the network that renewed Damages twice with some of the worst ratings of all time, so I'm pretty sure this is a very safe bet.

You can gloat about your membership in the Slapaho nation as much as you want, still doesn't change the fact that only 100 people watch Damages.

I have been seeing promos for this for the past month just about every day now, and I just don't get it...it almost seems like you've got to be very high to laugh at this but since I don't smoke I don't think this show is for me. What do you guys think after seeing the promos?

See I'll check it out because I too am a fan of his going way back to when I was a kid and saw North and Flipper in theaters. But I just don't know if maybe it's the promos and the show might be awesome but I just can't figure out what to expect really.

Just found a new promo for this show which I found really funny. Especially him and the stuffed dog bits. Can't wait for this to start.

I'm interested in seeing how this turns out, as I recently discovered the Australian version and bought the first series on DVD, and it is a nice show. I'm a big fan of black/dark comedy, and I wonder how dark the American version will be and I hope this American remake doesn't have to reign it in a bit because of the channel it is on. I'm glad to see Wilfred being played by the original though

FX is the only cable channel that really pushes the envelope. It's not a premium channel so they don't have straight up nudity, but this is the hardest station on american cable. I wouldn't expect many if any punches to be pulled.

Excellent! I'm glad this show has been brought to the right channel, as sometimes shows get shown on the wrong channel and can suffer because of it.

'Wilfred' is FX's highest-rated comedy premiere ever
Quote:
FX’s Wilfred debuted last night as the network’s highest-rated comedy premiere ever.

The show drew 2.6 million viewers and a 1.2 rating among adults 18-49, and if you include the show’s encore, the performance rises to 3.8 million. Gotta say, I loved this pilot and glad it’s getting such a strong start. Keeping the high-concept idea rolling will be the trick. FX’s Louie also returned improved to 1.6 million viewers and a 0.8 rating, up 42 percent from its first season premiere.

Wow, did not expect that. Very well deserved! I really liked the premiere. I wish Louie drew those numbers, but it's nice to see its numbers improved.

I watched it, and yeah it was completely absurd and amusing, but I don't believe the gimmick of Wilfred will be enough for me to stick with this for a full season, I might give it another episode or two and see if it can hook but but I don't see that happening. No surprise though, cause I didn't like a single promo and didn't actually expect to even watch this pilot.
