Talking My DIY Absorption Panel Project - Updated!!

OK folks, decided to toot my own horn again. I'm not sure I like the turn out of my panels as well as I like my TV stand, but hey, these took less time....at least the first two that I've finished.

You can see quite a bit of waviness in the microsuede....but I'm not gonna let that bother me. The theatre is DARK most the time anyway. And these were much cheaper than the pre-mades I found.

Here are the first two, completed (brown on left, tan on right):

They started as Roxul panels from ATS Acoustics, spray-glued them to peg-board, covered with microsuede from Wal*Mart and there you have it....

There are a couple more pictures in my gallery.

Roxul, 6-pack, 2" - 2'x4' panels, delivered from ATS: $57.80
Peg-board, 4'x8', cut by the dude at Home Depot: $16.46 (lucked out here, dude accidentally started to cut them into 2'x2' panels...so he gave me one full sheet for the CULL price ($0.51)!!!
Spray-glue: $13.34 (could have found for less, should have bought two cans)
MicroSuede (almost 6-yards): $24.01 (Wal*Mart)
Air-compressor: free (borrowed from friend)
Air-stapler & Staples: $32.49 (Harbour Freight)
Total: $144.10 = $24.02/panel!!

Here's hoping they help!!

thanks for looking

I like them, peg board is not something I would have thought of good job!

Since I'm using the Roxul Acoustical Fire Batts, which are just mineral wool....and are VERY flexible.....I had to use something more than just a frame.

If I wanted to spend the extra $25, I could have gone with the ATS Acoustics Rigid Fiberglass Board (which is a basic clone of the Owens Corning 703) then I wouldn't have needed anything to support the 2'x4' dimension.

The Owens Corning 703, if ordered through ATS, would have been $40 more than what I spent.

Have you got the panels hung up? How has it affected the sound in your room?

I have not hung any yet....the two behind the front speakers will most likely stay right there....maybe raise a little.

The other three that I've finished so far (the fancy new look that 3M went to for their spray glue can...it's really just a ploy to make you not notice it has like a third less contents than the old can).

I've got them leaning against a wall right now. Pretty sure I'll do two on the left wall (right wall is windows with sound absorbing curtains. Then maybe two on the ceiling.

I also recently got 32-square feet of Auralex Studiofoam (DST-114). I've probably got way too many for my little theatre tho. ---I'll see, most likely do these in the top corners; right above the speakers on the ceiling; under the windows (behind the curtains).

I'm currently working on posting my theatre in my gallery...I should be listening to my system. Taking notes, trying different locations for the panels. But I'm not.

You know, my NEED for panels kinda woke me too. I'm still not sure I needed them...but it was a fun project. Good to complete...especially now that I've mounted the panels to my ceiling....see below..

Hung these two on the wall...yes at an angle (you're not going crazy).
Used simple picture frame wire:

Then mounted two on the ceiling, with a 2'x2' Auralex StudioFoam panel on an end or the other:

I used these to mount them to the ceiling. One at each end, mounted in opposite directions. Then screwed the other half to the ceiling. Slid the panels on and ta-da
