Unhappy Why won't PS3 resume playback from where I left off?

My biggest pet peeve with using my PS3 as my BD player is that it never resumes playback from the point where I stopped watching. For example, if I pause a movie during playback, and then shut off the PS3, when I power back up, the PS3 brings me back to the BD's main menu instead of resuming playback from the paused point. I then have to try & remember where I left off.

Is there a setting that I'm missing?

Due to BD-Java on certain Blu-rays, no BD player can resume on those discs. It is a problem inherent in the format. Each studio is supposed to add the capability through software on the BD itself, but many have not added the function to resume.

The alternative is to set a bookmark, which is a feature most BD-Java discs have. You'll have to go through the menu and everything, but you'll be able to get back to the exact spot you left off.

It's not just the PS3.

Besides, is it really that difficult to check the playback time and go to that point when you next put in the disc? Or, is it that difficult to use bookmarks? Or, is it that difficult to actually watch the content as it was designed to be watched... from beginning to end.

I never "resume" content if I need to step away from it. I will always start it over and watch the full presentation. That means that if I'm watching the end credits, I also watched the opening credits in that same sitting. In the past I have found that stepping away from a storyline for any longer than 3 - 5 minutes actually "jars" the entertainment experience. It creates a rift in the enjoyment because my mind gets too seperated from the emotional/psychological flow of what is happening in the film.

This arguement has so many counterpoints that it really is moot at this point!

Does it on my Samsung BD C6500 player also. Being relative new to the BD experience myself this has been an annoyance but the PQ is worth it in the end.

LOL...I'm glad someone else with kids can relate.

For those who can still watch their movies w/out interruption and/or parental "editing" (i.e. hitting the fast forward button REALLY fast during R-rated scenes when the kids walk in), I envy u...

On the PS3 - instead of pausing the movie, actually select STOP. This will exit you from the movie and return you to the PS3's desktop (XMB). The next time you start up the movie, it should resume where you left off. I will note that it doesn't work on every movie, as I've seen a few that it still takes me to the menu (most notably Kung Fu Panda), but it will work on many titles.
