Default THX Home Theater Speakers

Any ever heard a complete THX home theater system? I mean thx certified speakers by JBL, M&K etc etc. Does it sound different from your run of the mill everyday speaker from Paradigm, Klipsch etc. I was always intrigued by their hard roll offs at 80hz and supposedly highly directional speakers..thoughts? experience?

My dad had the MK THX150 system years ago, honestly i thought it was the best small speaker set-up i have ever heard, i know Lucas uses them in some of his mixing rooms so that must mean something. I wish he never got rid of them i would be using them as we speak, i'm still looking at replacing my current setup with M&K speakers.

Check out the Klipsch THX setup, I've heard them and they are very much not run of the mill.

I've heard several THX systems by the following companies:
Atlantic Technology 450 and 350 thx systems
Klipsch THX system
Snell THX system
Jamo THX System
Fosgate Audionics THX system
Technics THX system

Of these the most musical was the Fosgate Audionics system (speakers designed by either Duntech or Dunleavy that used Morel drivers the first system not the Citation version) and the Snell system. These two systems played music great as well as movies. The Klipsch system did very well at movies (first system that I heard Master and the Commander on - preBD). The others were good a movies but lacked something in the music side.

How did you like the Jamo D-600 series? (i think there is a D-500 as well iirc)
It wouldn't surprise me that they aren't good musically.

Because of Jamos other 2 channel offerings (this is when the Oriel was their top speaker) and being spoiled by the Snell and Fosgate systems, the Jamo THX system sounded a bit weak in music IMHO.

But was there actually a difference since they sported a THX logo? I don't any stores around me that carry any of those speakers so I was always curious as how they performed compared to the rest of the brands out there.

Good speakers are basiclly....good speakers, regardless if they paid the money to be approved by THX or not. THX speakers meet a standard for movie reproduction, however this standard is not always condusive to music playback. Was there a positive difference just because they were THX speakers .... no. As a matter of fact, with the exception of the Fosgate and Snell packages - the difference was negative when it came down to compairng them to good music speakers.

Most of those speakers are now discontinued and were extremely expensive in their day! I haven't heard too many new THX based options. I don't even see them as often as I used to.

Speakers are subjective to the listener so the best thing to do is go out and listen to some speakers and see which ones you like. Just because the speaker has THX on it does not mean it will be a speaker you like.

Raising this thread back again.

U could see I'm running Paradigm Studios right now. I've seen some MK S-150 and MK 750 speakers come up for sale. Both are not local to me so I cannot sit and listen.

for those of you who have heard these systems...were u blown away? 100% HT here.

Are they something REALLY special?

Most of the reviews i've read are from ages ago.

I heard last year the Klipsch THX Ultra2 Powered by Onkyo and they sounded great , but i would not use this set for music unless it's a concert BR disc .

I have the Jamo D6 full 7.1 system and I bought it for a deal I couldn't pass up at the time. I think I paid something like $800 for a lightly used system from a friends shop back when the recession hit hard. I would have to agree that this system is outstanding for movies and being that's all I use it for I'm completely happy with it, but it's not a system for music.

FWIW I'm running them using an Onkyo TX-NR818 and it matches up quite well but I'm looking at buying a house and will have a dedicated theater room so I'll step up to THX Ultra2 separates when I do that.

I am curious as to what does the certification measure. From the THX website, all it says is that the speakers are certified to reach reference level (85db w/ 20db headroom) in various levels of room volume and viewing distances. Are there any other considerations for certification? Thanks.
