Default LCD/LED same as LED?

When a tv is described as LCD/LED is that the same as LED?
I see some described one way and then some simply led.

If there is a difference what is it?

Thanks

LCD refers to the technology. LED is the type of lighting used with the technology. Many LCD TVs are not of the LED variety, because they use traditional lighting. However, many LCD TVs are lit by LED lights. In other words, a TV can be of the LCD tech type, but not be LED.

I guess it's possible that other tech could use LED, but it is unlikely. Plasma is a different technology altogether, and I'm not even sure if anyone is making DLP TVs anymore. I think it's safe to say that the LED TVs you're seeing advertised are LED LCD TVs.

LCD is liquid crystal display, LED is light emitting diode.

The tvs have a LCD panel, but LED is the lighting system. You have edgelit LED and Backlit LED the majority for the ones you see now are edgelit, but they also have Backlit ones as well aka the Sony XBR8.

So when you see LCD/LED its a LED lighting system with a LCD panel. I true LED television would be very pricey!

LED TV is essentially misleading consumers in my opinion.

Because uneducated consumers actually think they are buying an LED TV, of which there is no such thing on the market. It's just an LCD TV that is using LEDs for backlighting instead of using flourescent lighting. But, it's still an LCD TV, any way you look at it.

Thanks for the info I think I'm following....
There is NO true or complete LED , so if a tv is advertised
as either LED or LCD/LED (look some models have one way or the other)
they are the same right?

Now as far as edge lit or back lit which is the better & how
do you determine that?

Seems the vibe I'm getting is LED is no big deal

I am curious about that as well...I know that the LED lit TVs allow for a thinner form factor but do they render better colors, or for that matter blacker black levels? Do they even make multi wave length diodes?

My Sharp TV has analog(..for lack of a better term) lighting...5 wave length backlight for "Sharper images and deeper black levels" according to product literature.

Because LED backlighting is so much brighter than traditional flourescent backlighting, you are able to obtain a better contrast ratio, but don't automatically assume that brighter = better. I, for one, am not a fan of LED TV's, simply because of the way they're misrepresented in stores with a jacked up backlight and contrast (otherwise known as torch mode). Even with a brighter backlight, LED's still got nothing on plasma black levels.

Well then it's really nobody's fault but the uneducated consumer, now is it?

As far as the black levels on LED LCD, I don't think anything's going to beat a Kuro right now. But with the Panny rising blacks, I think a properly calibrated XBR or last year's LG and Sammy along with his year's LGs can give some plasmas a run for their money.

That is true, but you can say the same for people who get scammed by white van speaker pricks. Does it make it right? Shouldn't we try and hold companies more accountable for the way they market products?

Agreed regarding pure black levels, but not so much ANSI contrast and motion resolution where I think the VT25 seems to be king, definitely a calibrated XBR8 will best entry level plasma's but of course so too does the price tag.

Hopefully by 2012 someone will best the Kuro in all areas so that I can buy it. I don't care if it's Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, LG, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, Hitachi; you make it, I'll buy it. I am performance-driven, not brand-driven. I will be surprised if the eventual Kuro-beater doesn't come from Panasonic, but will not be dismayed.

Agreed 100%. It is up to us as AV enthusiasts to call BS when we see it. For example, with two HDMI-certified categories how does Monster come up with 4 speed categories for their cables? It's nonsense. Bose's lack of measured frequency response graphs is another.

Mitsubishi offer 60", 65", 73" and 82" 3D DLP sets.

Not a bad way to go when you consider you can get an 82" 3DTV for $3,500.
(Amazon's current price = $3,518)

No, it's the fault of the TV manufacturers intentionally misleading consumers into thinking they're getting an entirely new TV display technology when they're aren't.

Samsung's "LED TV" adverts have been ruled as misleading in the UK by the Advertising Standards Authority and they will not be allowed to use that term again in the UK (without clarifiying that the LED is only for the back-lighting):

LED screens are used, but on an immensely large scale. The screen at Turner field in Atlanta is an LED Array, as well as the screen at the new Cowboys stadium(I believe). If I remember correctly the ribbon around the Bird's Nest in Beijing may have been an LED Array as well.
