So World of Warcraft has changed its rules on forum postings meaning that you have to use your real name. Some newspapers in the UK have also made this change to their forum, so no more hiding behind a cool username when you make those inflamatory posts!
How would people here feel about a similar change? I've always found this forum to be the most friendly, positive, welcoming and enjoyable forums I've ever used and I don't think it would bother me if instead of Partridge my real name appeared. But what do others think? Does it stop people posting cr@p? Does it make them think twice before throwing insults at each other and getting into flaming wars? Just curious, as it's something I've wondered in the past; what if, from the outset, the internet could only be used by registered users and everything they did in public forums, comments sections, etc, had to display their real name. On the one hand what does it matter? A lot of people will have common names and a name on its own doesn't reveal much about you. On the other hand, all your friends will know that it was you that posted such and such, whereas they might not realise you are posting as "death-head3000". Thoughts, views and opinions on what could be a new trend... |

But then don't people just buy timecards to play WoW online? You can buy timecards at Amazon and play can't you? Does Blizzard require a credit card on file? Anyway, I'm sure it will stop a lot of the insults and fighting. But then I can see the problem where someone has a truly unique name in a small town somewhere, that person rubs another the wrong way, stupid things can start happening in real life. |

Yeah, I wouldn't want my full name posted. There have been news reports of people getting into arguments on forums and the person tracking that person down and killing them (happened a little over a year ago).
I don't see how it would solve anything. I like user names, it's fun to see what people come up with and can sometimes give you some quick insite into their personality. Besides, if we all used our real names, we wouldn't get cool names like "beefytwinkie". ![]() Also, if some dude is going to own me in a game, I'd rather be killed by "Goliath99" than, "Bob Smith". ![]() |

Wouldn't really bother me. But you know how some sites/forums require you to sign up before you can even view certain things like threads or galleries? I'd think twice about signing up for those if I had no interest in participating in conversation and was just looking for answers/motivation (galleries).
I can think of one industry that wouldn't be quick to make this mandatory.. |
