I am guessing that WB is saving this movie for October the Halloween season. I mean most horror films that are released at the end of April/sometime in May are out on blu-ray/DVD in October. Two recent examples being The Strangers and Drag Me to Hell. Orphan was a July release I believe and it was released in October as well.

I finally got around to seeing this movie on Friday night. I can't think of a single redeeming factor about it.

At least Katie Cassidy looks great in it.

JEH wasn't bad, maybe with a better script he would have done a better job. But it's tough to imagine anyone but Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger.

It should be called Nightmare on Emo Street.

This film is a thousand times better than its reputation suggests, warts and all. I'd take it over the majority of the sequels.

My personal rankings:

Original
New Nightmare
Dream Warriors
Freddy's Revenge
Dream Master
Remake
Dream Child (for the production design alone)
Freddy vs Jason
Freddy's Dead

Oh wow...even the worst sequel(whatever you consider that to be) is like The Godfather, compared to this.

There’s certainly good things about this remake. I think the imagery that persists throughout the film is quite good. Freddy comes off as more of a frightening phantom than this guy who will pop out of an alleyway looking like a goon and chasing after you. The strongest parts of the original Nightmare On Elm Street were basically the moment you didn’t see Freddy on screen, or at least completely on screen. However, throughout a fair chunk of the remake, Freddy seems genuinely more frightening (again, when on-screen). I like what they did there.

Unfortunately, this film has far too many other flaws. I don’t really think the Freddy make-up worked, regardless of the ultra-realistic approach they were going for. The female lead was completely wooden (strange that I absolutely adored her years later in Carol). Some of the scenes they took right out of the original just didn’t work as well, either. If you’re going to ‘borrow’ something from an original film, you need to do it justice, or do it better, and they failed to do that.

Would I take this over any of the other Nightmare flicks though? That’s tough. I really don’t have any love for Nightmare On Elm Street 5, except for the finale. Freddy’s Dead… I used to love it when I was a teenager but now that I’m in my 30’s, it just doesn’t hold up for me whatsoever. So, I’d probably take this over them… but that’s it. Nightmare 1-4 and Wes Craven’s New Nightmare practically obliterate this film.

Kudos to you sir, for not being ashamed to say this.

And I agree 100%. Sure it has its flaws but I have always liked this remake from the moment I saw it at the theater. I even think Rooney's acting works (despite the fact she hated working on this), it suits her emo character IMO. It's also miles ahead of the dreadful Friday remake and I find it better than Nightmare 4, 5, 6 and New Nightmare combined. God, I hate those sequels!

There isn't a film in existence that could make Freddy's Dead look like The Godfather.

I've seen the remake once, and that's enough for me. Easily the worst Elm St. movie for me.

Freddy's Dead is hardly the worst of the series. I had it narrowed down to 2,5, or New Nightmare.

5 gets my vote by virtue of having the stupidest plot ever. The gratuitous violence in the VHS cut is the only thing that makes it watchable for me.
