Default What's your stance on buying Blu-rays if you already own the DVD?

I bought a PS3 40 GB early this month which included Spider-man 3.
I watched it and I could not believe the PQ and AQ that a Blu-ray movie was capable of producing.
I love watching movies at home and I already have a fairly large collection of 385 DVD's.

When I started buying Blu-ray movies I made myself a promise that I would not buy any Blu-ray releases of movies that I already owned on DVD but I have already broken this rule and now with all of the Spielberg movies coming out on Blue I'm starting to worry that I will collapse and buy everything again on Blu-ray!

What's your stance on buying Blu-rays if you already own the DVD?

Zak

I remember telling myself I will not buy the Blu-ray versions of any movies I currently had on DVD back when I got the S300. That went out the window after a week, after having watched a few Blu-rays I decided to sell the DVD's on Ebay and purchase the BD versions. I didn't sell all of them at once, I'm still working on in, I sell about 1-4 DVD's a week, cause it be pricey to buy all the BD's at once.

I'll rebuy movies I really enjoy. Die Hard, Batman Begins, V For Vendetta (when it comes out) Spiderman . . . these are all no-brainers for me. If it's something that will be a different experience in high-def, I'll rebuy.

I don't think my Road Trip DVD will get replaced with a Blu-ray

What are you getting on average for the DVD's you sell on ebay?
I have been thinking about doing this but was discouraged as I didn't think it would be worth my time after ebay fees.

Thanks,
Zak

ebay fees shipping... not to mention if they are used they're worthless... u'll get maybe 10$ total including shipping to sell them and then it'll cost you about 4$ to ship... not worth it IMO... take a look at even box sets of certain movies (i.e. look at LOTR special extended edition: all of them together is like 30$ new in box) so its useless to try and make even a bit of money off it... you'll sell em and maybe be able to buy four or five bd's at retail

Re-buy. Definitely. Doesnt even compare. Has to be a movie I really like though, to rebuy - i.e., I re-bought Troy, 300, Kingdom of Heaven - but would not rebuy Snakes on a Plane, Jumanji, etc.

Although I should note I buy no more DVDs. Bourne III will probably be the last one.

I sell off my DVDs on eBay as well and re-buy on Blu. I won't do it with all, but there's quite a few I will be doing this with.

I definitely don't make much as used movies definitely aren't worth much, but anything is better than nothing. I can't imagine owning both and deciding to watch the SD version afterall.

I'll sometimes sell them or gift them off to friends who haven't jumped on the blu wagon yet too.

Oh yes, and aside from the very odd movie here and there (mainly to get the wife to stop complaining), I haven't purchases a lot of newer DVD movies in the last year or two - I've stuck to a lot of TV on DVD which have no real intention of upgrading anytime soon.

If it's a title I really like, then I'll rebuy it. I no longer buy DVDs unless I know for certain that they were sourced from SD material. Yesterdays technology... Why bother!!!

ID4 will be a rebuy as will CE3K and Blade Runner. 2001 was a rebuy.

i rebuy action movies (for example, the die hards, spiderman, mr. and mrs. smith when it comes out, independence day)

in fact, i have rebought a bunch on both blu ray and hd dvd, and i sell my dvds for a rather good price.

however, i absolutely will not replace any comedies, because i frankly think dvd is fine for them

Re-buy but I've come close to having stopped buying regular DVD, including the studios that favor the red side.

I guess I will buy back the big titles which I love most e.g. Lord of the Rings, Starwars, the Pixar movies etc ...
And I will sell those DVD's. As for the other DVD's I'll probably keep them
Beyond that, anything new small or big: Blu only

If I like the movie, and/or it's a major improvement over the DVD and/or I can get it it a great price (usually BOGOs at this point) then I upgrade. Looking over my DVDs last night, I estimated about a 10% re-buy rate at best.

I got Devil's Rejects as one of my 5 free movies, just so I could make a comparison between a movie I already owned. I also bought the director's cut of Troy, since the PQ was supposed to be great, along with the fact that it was an extended cut.

Other than that, I haven't double-dipped.

My stance is that I only rebuy the films I truly love.

Alas, though, I am a weak, weak man...and I continue to fail miserably at my own stance. Did I NEED both Underworld movies in HD? No, but dammit, they were on sale!
