This Thread reminds me of these Threads...
Do You Still Buy DVDs "Lesser" Releases & Do You Keep DVDs You've Replaced & If Blu-Ray Version Is Not Available Do You Buy DVD If there is BD movies you CAN'T wait to purchase or see (Example: Good Will Hunting, Scarface, Titanic, etc) then I highly recommend purchasing a DVD Version. BUT, if the title IS available (from other Regions, or maybe "Soon To Be Released") I highly suggest that you just wait-it-out and continue collecting OTHER available titles that are or could be on your WISHLIST as well. JUST REMEMBER... PRICE (of a movie) = Purchase those movies that you like but not love at a VERY reasonable price. Just wait and see. (My Examples: Couples Retreat, Hot Tube Time Machine, Public Enemies, State of Play, etc) LOVE (for the movie) = Purchase those movies that you love and not just like that you cannot wait to see. Just save to purchase it on its Release Date, or wait for a drop in price. (My Examples: Avatar:Ultimate Edition, Dances with Wolves, Saving Private Ryan, Walk The Line, etc) NOT AVAILABLE (in YOUR Region or at all) = Purchase those movies that you like or love if only available from OTHER Regions or just wait it out (until they are available) they may be released in your Region with a better AQ & PQ). (My Examples: The Crow, The Game, Scent of a Woman, Shakespeare In Love, Timecop, etc) Some people DO NOT believe in ever purchasing a DVD again, but when it comes to your budget, something has to give.... I highly encourage those to wait for a very good price to purchase any BD, especially if it's not highly on your "BD Wishlist" OR if those releases don't have that good of a transfer or lack-there-of. Everyone, from every Region, is training themselves on how & when to buy BDs. Just remember that you are trying to UPGRADE your collection, not DOWNGRADE it. When in doubt, then just retreat and rethink your choices & budget. Quote:
I have most of these on DVD because they are NOT available on BD. These days you don't pay much for DVDs and if I feel like watching ANY of them, I have them. Just like the Tremors release, I've waited, soon it will be available, and now I've decided to wait for a good drop in price, before I pay $24.49 on it's Release Date. I could save for it, but I have the DVD, and there are other titles (on my "BD Wishlist") I would purchase then, instead, for less. BD AVAILABLE or NOT + DESIRE = PRICE ![]() +1, EXACTLY! I trust all the titles you have listed you have made comparisons between the standard dvd and the blu? Because if not you cannot say that these do not benefit from being on blu.
Now price is a different matter, but that all depends on how much you like the film. If it is one of your faves you are apt to pay more for the blu. Lastly I think if any movie is properly mastered/remastered on blu-ray it always is an improvement over it's dvd counterpart. |

Even the poorest quality AQ & PQ blu-rays I've seen are still a significant improvement over their DVD counterparts.
![]() About the only thing I've seen that might be a save for DVD is actually a matter of the extras. Many DVDs have extras that that have not / are not available on the blu-ray versions. Short of that, I'll take a poorly transferred blu over a superb DVD 100% of the time. |

Eventually I'll be updating all my favorite movies no matter the PQ/AQ, but some aren't as big of a priority as others.
Like a couple days ago, I was ordering a bunch of Blu-rays off Amazon and was trying to decide if I wanted to update A Clockwork Orange. I stuck in my DVD, and after reading some of the reviews and viewing the screenshots, I decided it wasn't a big enough of a difference. The Shining on the other hand is a huge difference, I got that one. I'll be holding on to the A Clockwork Orange DVD for a while and burning my old copy of The Shining. ![]() |

I would never buy a movie that wasn't good enough to buy based on the "movie itself" just because it had good PQ/AQ...... If all you care about is high quality/resolution, just turn off the T.V. and go outside and look around ![]() |

![]() he asked which movies are so poor that its not worth upgrading to blu. i assume this doesn't apply to Shawshank! ![]() another factor he listed was if the blu has poor AQ/PQ. unless i'm reading some other OP? Last edited by surfdude12; 07-30-2010 at 12:35 AM. |

I usually upgrade to BD for my all time favorite DVD. I have not upgraded Ferris Bueller's Day off, even though it is one of my favorite movies. The DVD quality is pretty good and I can always get other BDs of movies I don't have. The DVD cost me $4 on boxing day
![]() I have very few DVDs left now worth upgrading (LOTR:EE, 28 days/weeks)...just waiting for good price and/or release. |

DVDs for me have been relegated to the kids room. Everything I owned on DVD that is out on Blu I have, there are many more I'm waiting for.
The answer to your confusing thread is none, there isn't any movie that is "good enough" on DVD that I wouldn't want it on Blu, or even be willing to wait. I am fortunate to be in the position of money not being an issue, so I buy every movie I want as soon as it comes out. |
