Warner Bros A Clockwork Orange (1971)

A Clockwork Orange Blu-ray

A Clockwork Orange Blu-ray Review

Watched it last night and i got to say it looks AMAZING!!! I was very impressed with the PQ! Infact all the Kubrick films look ACE!!! I was suprised because most Warner releases aren't that impressive. Anybody else seen this one? what did you think ?

Considering it's such an old film, I thought it looked amazing both AQ and PQ

I haven't done Clockwork yet, but 2001 and The Shining are both incredible on Blu.

Great film, have it on DVD. I was going to buy it last weekend but I saw a bunch of Paramount titles so I waited.

I know there is some controversy about changing the aspect ratio of the film but overall you can tell that a lot of love went into the transfer of these Kubrick titles to BD.

3 months later....i just watched this movie and it was pretty good, but..anything not directly in the center was all wavy and stretched out like when you put you tv on widescreen on a 4:3 source...i have used the widescreen feature before and it gives you a headache so watching this movie while already having a mad headache didnt help lol...i dont know what aspect ratio this was shot in and if they stretched it out or not but unless they shot this movie using a periscope im not impressed..

i also watched the a couple scenes from the deluxe version of full metal jacket...and i dont remember the first version having (although i havent watched it in a couple months) smudged looking faces..i personally like the old version even with grain..

and to those who have seen polar express on blu ray( i only watched a couple scenes and then turned it off because of a ghosting looking video) aclockwork orange reminded me of that movie or was it deluxe fmj? well im not 100% sure what movie it was (90% sure it was a clockwork orange)because i forgot from having a mad headache lol...my question is does anyone agree?

That's probably some wideangle lens distortion from the lens Kubrick used. If you watch at 2PH (like in the Cinema) you will be immersed in it and notice it less.

Default A Clockwork Orange DVD vs Blu-ray Comparison

I am still weeding out learning how to take pictures with a DSLR. I am getting much closer though. I need to learn how to alleviate the colored lines that you see. Besides this, these should give you a semi-close comparison. A Clockwork Orange is worth the buy on Blu-ray only if you like the improved aspect ratio.

However, these are picture qualities only. From the pictures, is looks that the DVD is actually sharper, only likely because of the tiny aspect (fooling the camera?). The colors are more vivid in the Blu-ray. Discuss.

I have to seriously disagree with you.

Again, I disagree. On my system the clarity and sharpness of the blu-ray is a significant improvement over the dvd.

The only thing that disappoints me about the A Clockwork Orange blu-ray is that the audio is not an improvement over the DVD.

Are you able to get better screenshots of those above? I think the Blu-ray is a tad bit better, but the improvement is nil. The colors are definitely better.

I however, thought the sound was much more robust in the Blu-ray. It seems the improvement in sound stands out more than anything else with the transfer.

The point is, the $15 + tax upgrade isn't worth it IMO unless you are a Clockwork fan.

In that, I totally agree with you.

... my camera doesn't do justice to the PQ in a photo, I wish I could screen-capture

I thought the transfer was pretty good, but it showed up the flaws even more in Kubrick's technical abilities. I swear I don't understand why he is treated as some movie god. I love a lot of his movies - for the STORY only. Technically they make me cringe.

I mean didn't they even have focus pullers? Even on static shots it was often crap. Take for instance the scene where after Alex is released and he goes home, and he is crying and holding the package of his belongings from prison in front of him. His hands were in focus, but his face was out of focus. And it wasn't like is was a shot in motion, or a short shot either. It was a very prolonged shot. And you could see this happening throughout the film, all the time. Some shots were focused, some weren't. It was like the DP and director were all half blind. And they setup the camera and just left it run and never changed focus. And that scene in Home (first time) there is a dolly shot from the writers study to the lounge, and I swear the focus wasn't changed the entire shot.

So anything low res was basically focus issues. I did notice some shots where the color balance seemed to flutter a bit, but I expect that was the source.

People treat Kubrick like some film god, but lay crap on Michael Bay for making entertaining films. But I tell you what, on a technical proficiency side, Michael Bay could have shown Kubrick a lot and learnt nothing from him.
