That's interesting. I remember starting to watch this on YouTube a while back, but never made time to finish. I think I stopped at the part where the Claus's get stuck in some snowstorm before a light appears. But it didn't really flip my switch anyway. The only Salkind guilty pleasure I'd like to see on BD is Supergirl.

Is this the film with John Lithgow in it?

And David Huddleston may be one of the best Santas on film since Edmund Gwenn, but retire the jersey: Judy Cornwell (the sister on "Keeping Up Appearances") IS the definitive Mrs. Santa.
![]() ...Yeah, he's pretty much the one who stinks it up. ![]() Although your tolerance for his hammy cutesiness (or the annoying made-for-TV kids) depends on how much you'd bought into the film so far. Like the first Salkind Superman, the movie has a epic origin first half, and then the goofy villains come in at the forty-five minute mark to start the Goofy Plot. But the first Dudley Moore half of the movie is still one of the schmaltziestly perfect Christmas movies ever done on a big ol' old-school 80's Big-Set. |

I find the first half of this movie very impressive. David Huddleston is the perfect Santa, and the way the origin is presented is very grand and serious. Plus, the film's interpretation of the North Pole is the best I've ever seen in live-action, very convincing (Disney's interpretation for the Tim Allen films feels too stagey to me). Once we're in the (then) present day, though, the film kind of falls apart, turning into a farce that belongs in another film entirely. I'll still be purchasing this for the excellent first half.
