Smile I went Apple

I've talking about it for a while, but I finally went out and purchased myself a MacBook. I'm so glad I did. I got a Logitech V470 Bluetooth Mouse and LaCie d2 Quadra 500GB external hard drive (for Time Machine) today and they both work great. The mouse was immediately recognized by System Preferences, and the hard drive was preformed in HTS.

I have Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac preordered for January, and as soon as I get a sleeve, I'll have everything I need - I think. I've been using iChat since all I use is AIM anyways, and I like Safari so I think I'm going to go without FireFox. I haven't had to download any programs so far.

So, is there anything I need to download for this thing?

Run Software Update, and see if it comes up with anything--

Airport Extreme, also (assuming you've got the new model with native Airport card) is the official Apple-made compliant wi-fi transmitter, and connects nicely with any Bluetooth device in the house...PS3's included.

I do a lot of work using MS Office on Windows, so I need that compatibility. Unless I can open a .doc file in one of those freeware programs, I need Office.

My opinion on MS Office knock offs is "You get what you pay for". Office for Mac is a great application, I actually like it better than the Apple iWork package.

Well let's see. essentials
Disk Warrior will be your harddrive savior.
Toast is great burning software
the rest are really your choice on what you do with it.
Pro apps, FCP etc
Photoshop, illustrator,
Dreamweaver, Flash, Lightwave 3d
keep in mind on most Adobe apps you can download free full trials with a 30-day try out.
Other cool apps I like Snapz proX screen capture
ffmpegX for video/audio encoding
MAc the Ripper and DVD2One X for ripping Paramount DVD's

you just have to be careful in apps like power point, often things you create on your mac may not work right on a pc later on.

*Another thing to get is Flip4mac which allows wmv playback and exporting from quicktime, safari etc
also stuffit and zipeg for decompressing
Fetch for FTP
VMware fusion and windows xp if you want to have windows stuff.

I was in a computer store with a close friend, and casually mentioned no, I don't use MS software, let alone Office; I had my own desk and I was happy with using Apple's own AppleWorks for my WP--
And both the salesperson and the friend gave me this united look of "Oh, sorry to hear that... "

(...What, WHAT??
Is there some flies on Apple's own multi-office program? We're supposed to like MS's convoluted software programs now?
What hideously naive assumption am I making by sticking with AppleWorks, and how isn't it identical if not better-native?)

nice. I expect myself went neutral between PC and Apple soon (hopefully early 2008). I want to purchase MacMini (I forgot the name, butI think it's either minimac or macmini)

iWork just isn't as feature ladden as MS Office. Its really a shame, because I would love to abandon all Microsoft products. But there just isn't anything out there that can compete with it.

I will have to check out Neo Office until Mac Office 2008 is released. That looks pretty cool, and if it works, I'll gladdly throw some money their way.

VLC Player (ESSENTIAL)
Firefox (3.0b1 is out if you're a bit adventurous)
Azureus
Flip4Mac
Google Maps
Coconut Battery
Transmission
The Unpacker
FFView (if you read comics in CBR/CBZ form)
The Delivery Status widget for Dashboard.

IIRC, NeoOffice was compatible with Word 2007 before Microsoft released their converters for Word 97/2003. Oh, and I'd suggest setting up Boot Camp if you've got a copy of Windows lying around.

There are in-depth previews of Office 2008 at AppleInsider. It seems the MacBU made some strange choices when creating the Mac version. IMHO, iWork '08 is all the average person needs.
