Is this the proper area?
Can anyone and/or everyone provide me a list of headphones that I can buy to use with my Onkyo 805 for music purposed. I looked around online a bit but never got into the headphone area so if anyone can point out the good stuff with some recommendations, that would be swell. I'd prefer the larger headphones that cover the whole ear. I don't have an issue spending a few hundred on a nice product. Would a headphone amp be beneficial also? I'm having a heck of a time finding stuff. Seems everything is either $50 or below or above $500 (too much). Thanks |

Brand new Sony MDR-V900HD headphone is sold for less than $30 on Ebay. Its price is $170 at Amazon. I own one and rate it as a great headphone at an exceptional price. http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=SON....c0.m270.l1313 http://www.amazon.com/s?url=search-a...c=-1&x=13&y=29 Last edited by Big Daddy; 08-10-2010 at 12:04 PM. |

![]() I see in one picture listing that the foam is a brown color, while the box looks like it is black. What color is yours and did you buy from one of these Ebay listings? |

I can recommend the Audio-Technica ATH-M50 headphones as well. They are 32 ohm, so a headphone amp isn't necessary either. They have a really smooth sound, maybe a little bass heavy, but overall they sound very nice. Once I tried them with my music player, I could pick out the difference between lossy and lossless music encodes.

I agree with Grados, although I would step up a little and get at least the SR-125's. I would also recommend the Sennheiser HD-595s Both use a 1/4 jack rather than a 3.5, so they are more suited for home use |

I bought my wife the beats by Dr. Dre earphones for her Ipod when she walk's & they sound very good, but the bad thing you need batteries( they come with a variety of acessories, even to connect to the rec.), but I want to buy those new Monster Turbine pro's..I will post when I buy them and let you BR Gents know if there worth the money or not....

http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/...y-mdr-v900hd-s Seems to be a ton of fakes out there at least concerning the Sony headphone model. I'm going to have to stay away from that one. ![]() |

Appreciate all the inputs. I think I will be going with the Grados per the reviews I've been reading. Seems to be a lot for the price. Just got to figure out which model now. I think the SR-125 would be the max though
Is there a significant increase in sound quality using a headphone amp with a budget pair of headphones? |

ive got the grado sr80's they sound good, but are very open. people sitting next to your will be able to hear what you're listening too and you can hear them talking that sortof thing.
also they can get buzzy if hair gets in them (google grado rattle "grattle"), i have also noticed with the grados that they dont fit that well compared to closed headfones, they have a very loose feel about them, thats fine if you dont like heavy cans, i use them on my synth now. i recently upgraded to a pair of beyerdynamics (dt770 pro 250ohm) and a headphone amp and i havent looked back. As far as sound quality of headphone amps with a budget pair, it wouldn't be as effective. That's because they don't pull as much power as higher-end cans, and so an amp adding more to less powered cans would almost be pointless. I use a CMOY amp. |

all the grados mentioned (sr60is, sr80is, and sr125is) have great reviews everywhere. i'm thinking of eventually investing in a pair of sr80is. i just got a new pair of headphones for work that i'm really liking...sennheiser hd238s...they're smaller b/c they're made to be portable, but i think they'd work great as primary phones too. a nice pair of phones looks like the way i'll go w/ a planned 2 channel set i up i was dreaming of. phones just make more sense for me, and when you compare the price of a nice pair of phones w/ a nice pair of speakers there's no contest...
i'm thinking about buying an el cheapo fiio e5 amp to pair with my ipod but i don't really think an amp is a necessity with cheaper headphones. a site all about headphones is http://www.head-fi.org. you should be able to find out all kinds of info there... |
