If it is not too much trouble, can you please name some of the best Russian BDs which are Region Free and where I can buy them from. Thanks in advance!

I know you didn't ask me, but Andrei Tarkovsky's Andrei Rublev is out in Russia. It was released (in a longer "Dom Kino" cut) by The Criterion Collection on DVD in 1999, but the source material is in dire need of restoration for 1080p, and Criterion have stated that they have no plans to release the film on Blu-ray at this point.

The Russian BD can be had for US $21 shipped to the USA from Kniga.ru. The thread here should help you figure out how to order it successfully.

Note that I have not found another Russian shop that is currently willing to ship outside of the Russian Federation. Even well-known sites like Ozon.ru are not shipping internationally right now, for reasons that are unclear to me.

Hello Kailashu

McCrutchy has already provided some good info. What genres are you interested in? And I assume the discs have to be English-friendly?

I am also interested in some Russian blu's for my wife
She wants to get more classic Russian movies (50's - 80's)
I need them to be english freindly so that I can enjoy them with her.

Any connections or idea on how to obtain them would be greatly appreciated!!

George

Some titles are going to be released before the end of this year but the list is not yet announced.

It's a hardest part. Subtitles are rare on Russian releases.

Andrei Rublev (1966)
English subtitles

Jazzman (1983)
English subtitles

A Man from Boulevard des Capucines (1987)
No subtitles

Russian movies released on BD outside Russia:

Tsar (2009, Pavel Lungin)
French subtitles

The Island (2006, Pavel Lungin)
is coming soon in France

Newsmakers (2009)
English subtitles

A few rather recent and rather good Russian movies released on BD but without any subtitles:
Kuka (2006)
Hipsters (2008)
The New Year's Rate Plan (2008)

Announced but postponed releases:
They Fought for Their Country (1975)
Only Old Men Are Going to Battle (1973)

Spartacus (1977, ballet with Vladimir Vasilyev and Maris Liepa)
Coming soon from Digital Element

This is an interesting title that I had not heard of before, GeorgeP12. I found a BDInfo on the disc here, but do you know anything about the film itself? Is it any good? IMDb is severely lacking in info...

"My iz dzhaza" (Jazzman) was popular in its time. And nowadays its rating on kinopoisk.ru (the biggest Russian movie site) is 7.8 of 10 (1170 votes). But I dislike this movie. Really I dislike all movies directed by Karen Shakhnazarov. Maybe it's a personal allergy.

Hi UK member here and I wondered if anyone knew the best place to order 12 (2007) [Nikita Mikhalkov] considering I'm an international customer? I saw the film on DVD and really liked it, and would be interested in grabbing the Blu-ray as well.

Thanks

Hello Immersion,

If you speak Russian or Ukrainian, you could import the Russian release here as Kniga.ru will ship internationally, but according to the site, it contains only Ukrainian subtitles. I cannot find any other BD releases of the film.

Welcome!

Hi Mc, I guess I was a little eager and presumed the Blu-ray would have English subtitles too. But sadly I don't speak either languages, so I will have to hope for a wider release. Thanks for your help though.

don't suppose VIY is out, or coming?
The Ruscico DVD does nice with extras, languages, subs, but has terrible compression artifacting.

Thanks for the info in this thread.

I'm looking for 3 types of Russian related BluRay pretty much.

1- Like the OP in this thread, Russian films with English subtitles

2-English films with Russian subs

3-English films with Russian Dubbing.

My girl speaks good English and I speak reasonable Russian, but we both prefer having subtitles in our native languages so we can relax alittle and not have to concentrate so hard

Any help or pointers to BD's that contain the above would be a massive help, I have just trolled google for the best part of 2 hours with little luck :/

You can buy a lot of them outside Russia.
Check the first page of the topic "Import with Russian Localization" on Russian forum:
http://forum.totaldvd.ru/m_938436/tm.htm

The lists of BD releases from Russian shops:
http://www.kniga.ru/dvd/section/20104
http://www.ozon.ru/context/catalog/id/1098694/

For UK releases you can use a search by language of audio and/or subtitles on Blu-World:
http://www.blu-world.co.uk/en/Default.aspx?change=1
(though the information here is not always reliable).

Well, that would be every single English film released on Russian blu-ray! They rarely have original audio.

Yes, English subtitles is a must. I am not particular about a genre though I love war movies. Please recommend some blu's.

It was announced that Reliance MediaWorks Ltd (former Lowry Digital) will participate in restoration of Russian classic films and animation. First titles: Dozhivyom do ponedelnika / We'll Live Till Monday (1968) and Vinni-Pukh (1969)
