Default Card Card & Debit Card #'s stolen

so i've already called the credit card and they've closed the account.

what does your bank usually do when there are charges that you haven't made??

do you get the money back right away or do i have to wait??

b/c obviously my debit card is tied to my checking account and i don't want checks i've already sent out to bounce.

i guess there was a problem w/a guy i did a paypal transaction with and someone hacked his account.

my debit and credit cards had $1 charges but then credited.

i look today and there are almost $1000 worth of charges today!!!

Depends on the bank, you'll probably get the money back but you're probably out of luck if you get hit with bad check and/or overdraft fees.

A fraud research team will look into it. Might take several days.

Like Gandalf said.. you will get your money back, but not sure what will happen if they went over the limit, or a check getting bounced unless you have some kind of over charged draft protection that you signed up for.

Sorry to hear that. Good Luck.

I suggest you bump some extra cash (assuming you have it of course) into the checking account to avoid and check bouncing fees. Better safe than sorry.

Also make sure you weren't key logged or anything OP. That sounds like the culprit here. Scan your computer for pretty much everything and change your passwords after wards. Correct me if I'm wrong (I rarely use paypal to pay, almost always to receive money from my eBay stuff), but you can't pay with your CC through paypal anymore unless the person you are paying has a merchant account set up. Usually, only the bigger eBay people have merchant accounts set up. And by bigger, I mean 1k+ transactions a month. I have close to 200 transactions a month and still don't have a merchant account set up to take CC payments.

I thought the point of using Paypal was so that the person you're paying never sees your account information and Paypal just does all the work for you. I've never used Paypal before but hearing this just secures that fact.

Definitely do what DarkRider23 said. Transfer a bunch of money into your checking account to be sure your checks don't bounce ASAP. These days checks clear so fast now that everything is electronic. Some clear in one business day. I didn't know that either! I'm such a noob.

Just a month or so ago, my wife's debit card was used to make a $509 transaction at a CVS pharmacy in the next state over. The bank picked it up as likely being a fraudulent transaction and put a freeze on her card. SHE had to call in (I could not do it for her even though it is a joint account) to confirm or deny the transaction. After she denied the transaction was hers, her card was cancelled and a new one sent out. We were reimbursed the money about one week later, with the condition that if after investigation it was found to be a legitimate transaction, the money would be re-debited from the account.

The inconvenient part was that it happened on a weekend, and she had to go out of town on business that Monday, so hotel and what not had to be put on a credit card instead.

What the heck does someone buy for $509 at a CVS?

Most times the Banks should give you a provisonal credit based on the info you have reported. You might also need to get a Police report...Good Luck

Sounds like someone raided the pharmacy without insurance.

I've had PayPal put my debit card on hold before... Most notably, yesterday. I was using it to make tons of small $20 purchases and they ended up putting a freeze on my account and calling me at 9 in the morning today. They should have known that I was asleep and not awake at that time =(.

What's a card card?

Most banks will refund the purchases within a day or two (mine did when I had my card stolen ~10 years ago), though some leave you on the hook for the first $50 or so. They will probably NOT hold you responsible for any over-charges due to the theft, but your creditors will hit you with bounced check fees if the bank won't honor it due to insufficient funds. Do you have overdraft protection? If so, you should be fine.

Well, I had credit card stolen at the gym. I got on the phone 30min later and found out they had used the card at a gas station and charged all of $0.01 on it.

The next time, few years later, I was not so lucky. With a Mastercard, it was a $4,000 TV at Circut City. I had called withen 24hours, signed a form that came in the mail a few weeks later, got a new card, and the store had to write off the sale as a loss. The credit card company did not pay. Maybe this is why CC is out on business.

It was CC's fault for not checking ID. That's all the store would have needed to do.

You want to know some real bullsh--? Merchants cannot condition a sale on the presentation of ID. Mastercard and Visa prohibit merchants from requesting ID to complete a sale. As long as the card on the back is signed the merchant should honor the sale.

What does that mean? You go into a store with a fake credit card. It has someone else's name on it. YOU signed the back of the card. As long as you sign the receipt the same way you signed the back of the fraudulent credit card, the sale must go through. No ID is required.

To require an ID when you use a Mastercard or Visa card is against the rules and you may lose the privilege of accepting those two cards if you are reported by the consumer for not accepting the card because they would not show you ID. Merchants can ask for ID but cannot require it. Amazing isn't it?

Can't you sign the back of your CC/Debit card "See ID" then that forces the store to check the ID of the consumer?

When my dad lost a credit card thats the same thing we had! multiple CVS purchases for like 200-400 a pop... He called it in prior to them charging or trying to, but a mix up on the cc companies end still had it active, he was free of having to pay for the things they bought.

But really whats the deal with cvs

No, it is actually against the rules of the credit card companies to write anything other than your signature. A merchant could reject the card for not having a valid signature.

all of my cards have CID on the back and i actually yell @ people when they take my card and don't ask to see my id!!!

anyway......got to the bank this morning right as it opened. they set me up w/a personal banker and we went through everything.

had my debit card locked, can expect a new one in about 2 weeks.

the transactions are actually on "hold" and technically the money hasn't been taken out of my account yet.

and even if they clear, they'll refund me my money anyway.

no overdraft fees, they said they'd work w/me on that as well if something does bounce.

and if i have to get my account closed and open up a new one, they'll order me replacement checks for free as well.....i just had 2 boxes show up last week!!!

so, all in all, it still pisses me off this happend but i'm not gonna be out any money at all. and any refund they owe me will be back into my account within a week they said.
