Default Best commentary tracks on Blu-ray

As per thread title.

Off the top of my head:
  • The Matrix Trilogy: "Critic's Commentary" featuring critics Todd McCarthy, John Powers and David Thompson.
  • Dark City: Roger Ebert's commentary track

Are there any good ones out there that are worth listening to? I'm thinking of getting Blu-rays for their commentary tracks.

I listened to all 3 of those Critics Commentaries on the Matrix DVDs. The Wachowskis have balls of steel. Definitely some of the most unique commentaries I've listened to.

I've always like the commentary track on Apollo 13 from Mr. and Mrs. Lovell.

Another vote for Sunshine here. Both tracks are superb, but Prof Brian Cox's is just fascinating. It is basically a science lecture but anyone who has seen (or read) any of lectures - in particular the excellent BBC show "Wonders of the Solar System" - will know it's nothing like what you had at school. Excellent stuff.

John Carpenter and Kurt Russell on Big Trouble in Little China is so good
at the moment i cant really think of any other standouts but i love commentaries in general. i HATE when blu-rays dont have them, and filmakers who never do them. (Tarantino)

add Woody Allen, Clint Eastwood, Terrence Malick, and Steven Speilberg to the "never do them list"

Gangs of New York
-Martin is brilliant.

Lately I have really been into comedy commentaries: Tropic Thunder has a hilarious commentary. As well as: 40 Year old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad.

That's not quite right, he'll do a commentary on any movie in which he didn't have major involvement directing (Sin City, True Romance, Hot Fuzz [one of the best])

This is probably right but it's also one reason I am annoyed with Quentin. I'd have loved a commentary on Kill Bill and Basterds.

But yeah, I think I'll listen to the track on Sin City.

The Godfather films have really good commentary tracks.

he also did one for From Dusk Till Dawn.
and yeah the Hot Fuzz commentary is great, good call.

I'd say my two favorites are Dana Polan's commentary for "The Third Man" and David Kalat's commentary for "City Girl". The latter is unbelievably well informed and interesting to listen to!

Fight Club!
The track has got David Fincher, Brad Pitt and Ed Norton talking about the film, it's extremely informative and at times quite hilarious. There's one part where the frame of the penis comes up and Ed Norton says "David likes to appear in all his films". Pretty funny.

I love the audio commentaries of Sideways and Almost Famous.

One of the funniest moments of the Sideways commentary:

Quote:
Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church discussing the latter's naked backside on the commentary. Giamatti calls it "Two Glad bags full of ricotta cheese," Haden Church calls it "dueling pillowcases filled with milk." The rest of the commentary is filled with similarly colorful metaphors.

Almost Famous:

Quote:
Audio Commentary: Director Cameron Crowe is joined by Scott Martin and Andy Fisher from Vinyl Films, Crowe family friend Ivan Carona, DreamWorks' Mark Atkinson, and Cameron's mother Alice for an entertaining commentary track that's honest and forthright in discussions that not only revolve around the making of the film but also the true stories behind it. Crowe is the star here; he shares a world of knowledge that only serves to enhance the film, but his mother is an excellent addition as she's unafraid to comment on the family's personal history and how it relates to the film. A fantastic movie earns a top-notch commentary track; fans will definitely want to give this one a listen.

I'll go ahead and repost the ones I mentioned a few days ago:

Bob Gale & Neil Canton - "Back to the Future" trilogy
Chuck Russell (solo only) - "The Mask"
Alex Proyas - "The Crow"

I'd also recommend these, since the subject's on my mind...

Mark Steven Johnson & Avi Arad - "Daredevil" (director's cut)
James Cameron & William Wisher - "Terminator 2"
Kenneth Branagh - "Thor"
