Quote:

Nanny McPhee arrives to help a harried young mother who is trying to run the family farm while her husband is away at war. She uses her magic to teach the woman's children and their two spoiled cousins five new lessons.

Starring: Emma Thompson, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Maggie Smith, Rhys Ifans, Ewan McGregor, Daniel Mays

MPAA Rating: PG

Runtime: 109 minutes
I'll probably see this tomorrow, and catch Piranha in 3D next Tuesday at National Amusements, when all showings are only $6. The other movies opening this week, I'll probably skip. Unless I get the urge to check out Lottery Ticket.

Yyyyeah....Kinda expected.
That's one reason the first movie tanked in the US (and the UK too, although I'd need confirmation)--I'm sure Emma Thompson thought she was making Her Own Mary Poppins, but it was a Poppins that had all its charm removed, and a quick rewrite by Adam Sandler...
Sort of the Meanworld universe's attempt to shamelessly plagiarize the Disney film, and wondering what went wrong.

I don't think it tanked in the UK, considering a sequel has been made and that sequel has been out for about Half a year now over here, saying it's probably made it's budget back over here.

It was a fun movie. The cameos were great, and Maggie Gyllenhaal and Emma Thompson were both excellent. I gave it 4 out of 5.

Foggy is right, the original title for this is like Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang or something like that.

Yeah, I think they changed it because of Religious misunderstandings with the name.

If you're the type to think something along the lines of Mary Poppins or The Wizard of Oz is for kids only. I'm not saying this film is as good as either of those. Just that it has the same appeal.

No, it was just too presumptive that US audiences had seen or remembered there'd been a first one.
Sometimes the only way to make moviegoers aware of a sequel is to TELL them it's a second one, and hope they'll remember or go back and rent the first one.

(Like the first Harry Potter movie getting "Sorcerer" in its US title instead of "Philosopher", sometimes it's necessary for marketing to hit a cutesy title over the head with the Genre bat.)

I really really enjoyed this. While I still prefer the first one, this one comes pretty dang close. I was afraid it would feel too much like a clone, but it had a distinctive voice of its own, and all the new characters had different personalities than those of the original. The cameos were great, and I'm going to admit I gasped out loud when
[Show spoiler]it was revealed that Maggie Smith's character was Aggie, the baby from the last one.
A sweet and charming film. 4/5

Wow I guess it's just a flop here, looks like it did well outside the US.

It's an English film, It was going to do well over here and places close, it was never going to do great in the US.

Also, recent UK-produced big-budget kiddy-book films (The Borrowers, Five Children & It) have a tendency to be broad, overbearing and snipe-spirited in their attempt to "out-Hollywood" US films, and end up going for Home-Alone humor, which turns off US audiences going into the movie and expecting nice Victorian E. Nesbit.
The first NmP was just....evil, and thought it was being cute.

Well who says evil isn't cute? Just look at the mediocre Spiderwick Chronicles and Golden Compass.
