Welcome to the garden of PixelJunk™ Eden, a refreshingly different platform game wrapped in a vibrant world exclusively on PS3. In PixelJunk Eden, the latest downloadable entry to the PixelJunk™ series from developer Q-Games, living and luminous plant-life grows in real-time to form a lively stage. In this constantly evolving environment, players control a small creature called a “Grimp” (from “grip” and “jump”) to explore a dynamic setting alive with color and sound. By smashing into enemies, the player releases batches of pollen that can help the lush alien plants change and grow. As they develop, players can leap, swing and soar between them to get further through the undergrowth and gather all the bundles of energy and light from the level before the time available runs out.

The Dylan Cuthbert Interview, Part II

PixelJunk Racers was code-named PixelJunk 1-1, and PixelJunk Monsters was code-named Pixel-Junk 1-2. There's already an image for PixelJunk 1-3 on your Web site, what can you tell us about it?

PixelJunk 1-3 is as-yet unnamed but we have collaborated with a rather cool artist in Kyoto called Baiyon who is a DJ, musician and illustrative artist to develop some really interesting technology that creates illustrated "life" (that he has designed) that is also synchronized to his music. The game is a total experiment, but rest assured it is going to be very unique and a lot of fun, and it isn't going to be a "rhythm" game.

For PixelJunk Monsters we also collaborated with a Japanese music group called Otograph who made for us a very unique sounding ambient soundtrack.

In the future I want to experiment even more with this kind of collaborative effort as I think it is important to mix in art and culture into games if we are to be taken seriously.

IGS: Q Games' Cuthbert Reveals PixelJunk Eden, Postmortems Series

As an ending point, Cuthbert then showed a video for PixelJunk Eden, the next in the series, and a spectacularly abstract physics-based game where you collect pollen and birth flowers as a small blob - with plenty of primary colors and combo effects.

The Q Games co-founder suggested that the title was "kind of like an organic Mario, in a way" - and its psychedelic visuals went down very well with the audience.

PixelJunk Eden Hands-On

PixelJunk Eden is one of those simple-to-look-at, difficult-to-describe games that often come out of Japan, meaning it's really one of those games you need to see in action in order to really understand it. However, at its most basic level the game is a platformer-cum-collecting game in which you guide a little creature around a series of platforms and branches in order to collect as much pollen as possible. Your little creature is able to fire a sticky string that can cling to surfaces, and once deployed he can swing round in a circle in an effort to burst the nearby stars. He then needs to circle round again to collect the pollen, which really is the key to the game.

The game is set to launch on the PlayStation Network at the end of June, and although no price has been announced the representative told us the cost would be comparative to other PSN titles on the market. There will also be remote play possible on the PlayStation Portable, so if you have a networked home and a PSP then you're in for a treat. PixelJunk Eden also promises a disco soundtrack which should perfectly match the visuals--we'll just have to wait until next month to find out if it's a package worth investing in.

PlayStation Day: PLAYSTATION Network round-up

There's something wonderfully enchanting about PixelJunk Eden that captures the imagination from the very first glimpse, eliciting a smile or at the very least, a dash of curiosity. Maybe it's the way the distinctive 2D visuals are shaded, with the 1080p resolution giving them a rather mesmerising glow... a bit like a lava lamp. Or maybe it's the way the game naturally expands as you get better at it, not only opening up new areas but organically changing the title screen as well which allows access to new levels. Or perhaps it's a combination of all these things rolled up into a quirky ball of charm that suits the pick up and play addiction of previous PixelJunk titles, Monsters and Racers.

Regardless of the reason one thing is clear at this early stage - PixelJunk Eden is shaping up to be something refreshingly different. Q-Games' title takes the platform genre and places it within a vibrant garden where your tiny gardener is given the task of collecting out-of-reach treasures. The only way of obtaining these prized possessions is to smash into some of the roaming enemies and release pollen into the alien plants which grow - allowing you to gain access to higher areas thanks to your trusty bungee grapple and rope.

Compelling and fun, PixelJunk Eden looks to continue the fine form of Q-Games' unusual and successful PixelJunk games. Expect more on this little patch of Eden soon.

End of June according to Gamespot. Might release Japan/Asia, then North America, then Europe as usual but I doubt there's as much to translate as MONSTERS so we'll see.
