Default Best TV to get?

Stupid question (and probably one asked a lot here) but what would the best TV for this room be? Should be at lest 43+ inches (less than 50 though).

What to consider:

  • Most likely going to be used for gaming (Wii, PS3, possibly Xbox 360 (if Kinect gets a good tennis game)
  • Because it'd have a PS3 connected, it'd probably be used for DVD/blu ray () vids.
  • Possible Netflix (PS3, Wii, or the TV it self)
  • Most likely going under a fireplace mantel, IN FRONT of a fireplace. Though it doesn't get used that often.
  • My personal preference would be a LED & a Sony. As a LED is lighter and thinner than a LCD, and if we have to use the fireplace we can just move the TV onto the carpet (might be on a stand). And I say Sony because I guess I'm just tiered of seeing the same or similar user interface for Samsungs, LG, etc.
  • The PS3 might be hooked by HDMI cable along with RCA (possibly).
  • NOT a 3d (ready) TV
  • Not to put down Plasma, but I am fine with a little lag, and also not the BEST picture possible.

I think I had more but it lost in formatting, as I've had the thought to create this topic since I 'joined' . . . . .

Could anyone tell me (with a internet enabled TV) how netflix works? Similar to how the discs work for Wii & PS3?

With what you're asking for, you're pretty much limiting yourself to a Sony 46" LED (EX700/710, NX700, or NX800).

Wouldn't be surprised if we got another Samsung, an LG, or some other companies TV. My personal preference would be a Sony, because I'm tired of seeing about the same interface for all the other TV's manufacturers.

IT may end up being a LCD, and not a LED, which is fine.

Probably the 2 best LED television sets you are going to get would be the Samsung UNB8500 series from last year and the LG LE8500 model from this year. Both are pricey but you did ask for the "Best". Also I've heard nothing but good things about the LG LH90 series also.

I'd think about 1500 is our spending limit. 46 inches or less (down to probably ~ 42 I'd think) . . .

Well the LG LH90 is your best bet then. They have a 47" going for 1549.99 on amazon.com. Probably could be had for cheaper if you search around.

Check out Amazon especially since you could potentiality save on tax.

Btw, all LED HDTVs are LCD; they are just LCD TVs that are back light by LEDs.

Take a couple of your favorite Blu-ray discs and play the same chapters on the different panels you're looking at. You'll decide pretty quickly from there.

Get your self a LED local dimming full array, not just edge lit LEDs. This is suppose to give you deep black. A while back, I've been checking SONY XBR8, Samsung LNA950. I end up getting Samsung 55" 8500 which is the model after the LNA950. Good luck on your hunting.

So the suggested models are:

Sony:

EX700/710
NX700
NX800

Samsung:

UNB8500

LG:

LE8500
LH90

Also we don't have a Blu-ray player, either alone or as with other functions (PS3, for example). I know we'll get about 46 inches or smaller, doubtful we'll get LED right now.

Sony... Period.

Samsungs (even though a lot of people like them) lose a lot of detail in dark areas & scenes, to the point shadows can look like black blobs. I have never, ever evaluated a Samsung that has the shadow detail of a Sony (and I've come across quite a few). Besides, in general, Sony's picture is much more natural looking than Samsung's.

LGs have good pictures, but make sure you get a good warranty that's not backed directly by LG, because I have heard horror stories regarding LG's customer service. I've also heard a good amount of negative remarks regarding LG's reliability in general. So much so that at one point, I had considred an LG for a bedroom set, but completely scrapped the idea.

Go with the 46 inch XBR8 if you can find one in your price range. Onecall has them, but they are $2000.

Well then for Sony's, which of these?

EX700/710
NX700
NX800

From what someone here has said, they'd probably still rather get a LCD than LED, which I am fine with, we just need to get a replacement TV for this room and it may be used for what was noted in my first post.

Samsung makes pretty much all of Sony's LED's and Sharp makes their LCD's. Unlike Loewe who produce their own engine for the Sharp panels, Sony makes only minor adjustments to the panels before placing their name on them.

Things that LED has going for it... thinner, lighter and uses 30% less energy. Both LCD and Plasma use the same amount of current. Plasmas used to be VERY power hungry.

I am not sure if we'll get a LED, he's thinking 720 is fine, as the old Samsung we had --- though was 1080 it almost never got used (except mostly for Wii games, RARE 'movie'). We have a Sony CRT (34") in a different room and except for Tennis (we) can't really tell any difference in SD or HD, except the ball is hard to differentiate and or tell where it is.
